If You DRINK WATER or bathe in water or generally are adverse to your household water catching fire and exploding...
you might be interested in the HBO Documentary "Gasland".

This issue impacts us directly in the Capitol district. We are on the edge of the Marcellus Shale Gas Field, which may soon be drilled using Hydrofracking.

...we appreciate that you heat with wood. Oooops! Forgot, radical environmental democraps are banning that too! Oh then you must just use lots of blankets and wear home grown hemp clothes. Is that why you stink so bad, Grocuho Marxist? No hot water?

You want the energy, but don't want to exploit the energy. Maybe Mother Gaia will just make it all better along with lord Obama. You are a true Obama scholar.

There are no guarantees anywhere on the face of this earth that doesn't come with some risks. A tree could fall on someone for God's sake. Does that mean we cut down all trees over a certain height or diameter?

Man will never create a utopian world. NEVER! We are not God, in case anyone hasn't noticed! The world we live in is naturally viotle. We work with what we have and make the best of it. Accidents happen, man made or otherwise. People die. That is life on planet earth. And yet we still procreate and survive. Shocking, huh?

Thank God someone took the risk to rip someones chest open and repaired a heart. Thank God someone took the risk to make a machine that could fly higher than the clouds. People still die during open heart surgery and in plane crashes....but the positive results out weight the negative.

I swear that people today have OCD!!! Take a 'chill pill'!!

...yeah, people's water explodes all the time.

Seriously-Actually the fumes presented by many wells are flamable and explosive and it is not unheard of for explosions to occur in houses where people have drilled water wells. But no need to get any other facts, just demonize the energy industry (along with the bank, insurance, pharma, food, lumber, building, medical, auto, manufacturing, retail, food service, fertilizer, rubber, metals, mining, fishing, auto repair, and all other industires that employ Americans come to think of it.) But the government industry is pure, noble, good, decent, perfect, honorable, efficient, fair and all-American in every way. Only THEY can be the arbiters of all things great and small.

GB...
The water in those homes was perfectly fine... no gas, no fires no health problems...
Until the Gas wells were drilled.  Then many homes had polluted wells.
Their homes were unsellable.  They sued the gas companies who admitted no guilt with their polluted wells, but paid for water and storage tanks to be installed at these homes... as long as the homeowners signed a gag order not to discuss the settlement.

" A tree could fall on someone for God's sake." Accidents happen... it's no one's fault... Kind of like smoking and lung cancer... or asbestos in brakes causing mesothelioma... or the poisoning at Love Canal... They are all accidents!!!

I think you'll be hearing much more about hydrofracking once the process starts in our area.

Booster of fracking for natural gas overlooked the many dangers

I wish to call your attention to the July 27 Viewpoint, “Drilling shale will mean jobs and revenue for state.” The author, Edward Leighton, should do his homework before recommending large-scale drilling for methane and natural gas.
In my reading of his column, I see nothing about the cause of hesitation for this drilling in New York or anywhere else. One very important concern is what this drilling does, or may do, to area water supplies. If he looked, he could have learned there are many publicized incidents of this damage already in Pennsylvania and other states.
In my home county of Schoharie, there are large areas of karst subsoil. Karst is dissolved by water and is the reason there are many caverns (like Howe Caverns), cracks and crevices in this county. When some wells are drilled in a Karst area, [it] is not uncommon to pump a neighbor’s sewage. It is not difficult to see what might happen if methane and natural gas wells are made in such areas, too.
Leighton could have also found in the literature that the hydraulic fracturing, in addition to going great distances of depth and lateral direction, may require a million gallons of water and chemicals. When this is pumped out at the completion of drilling, how is this quantity properly disposed of without contamination of near or faraway wells and other water sources?
It is a well-known fact that one person’s (or perhaps business’s) wastewater is another person’s drinking supply, either directly or after passage through fi sh or other food animals. The drilling Leighton discusses is not just a question of creating jobs and revenue, it is a huge problem of water supply and safety.
I am thankful that New York state is not jumping into this procedure until more scientific study has determined how it can be done in a non-threatening manner to water supplies.

Same old shortsighted view on hydrofracking

Re July 21 article, “EPA takes new look at ‘fracking’ method”: The Gazette’s front page story on “fracking” includes several widely accepted points that demonstrate our nation’s myopic views on energy and our environment.
The first point: “. . . the wealth of natural gas . . . enough to supply the entire East Coast for 50 years.” Are we so near-sighted that we are willing to compromise our water supplies and deplete a non-renewable energy source in a mere 50 years? Isn’t clean water more important than gas or oil?
The second point: “. . . necessary to keep the nation on a path to energy independence.” How is that second point different from a heroin addict wanting to use locally grown opium rather than opium from the Taliban? An addict is happy to deny his/her behavior is the problem. We, as a society, deny our oil addiction is a problem. Hey, we just need energy independence, we can tap a 50-year supply! We maintain the same addictive behavior, and blithely accept the talking points of the oil and gas industries. It’s time to look beyond the next few years, protect our environment and become energy-efficient.

NY attorney general suing feds over gas drilling
MARY ESCH, Associated PressWednesday, June 1, 2011

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The federal government should conduct a full environmental review that weighs potential damage to the welfare of people in the Delaware River watershed and the drinking water quality for millions of New Yorkers before allowing natural gas drilling in the region, the state’s attorney general said in a federal lawsuit filed Tuesday.

Eric Schneiderman said in the lawsuit filed in Brooklyn that the Delaware River Basin Commission, with approval of federal agencies, proposed regulations without doing a full review as required by the National Environmental Policy Act.

Gas is being extracted in the Marcellus Shale region underlying southern New York, Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio and West Virginia using high-volume hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. Drillers are pumping huge volumes of water laced with chemicals and sand into a well bore to fracture surrounding shale, releasing the gas........................>>>>..........................>>>>.....................http://www.newstribune.com/news/2011/jun/01/ny-attorney-general-suing-feds-over-gas-drilling/
