A top Democrat kept up the Joe Barton drumbeat Sunday, saying the Republican legislator's defense of BP last week was an example of GOP ideology that favors big business.
Republicans seeking to change the subject countered that the nation's focus should be on efforts to stop the Gulf oil gusher and criticized the Obama administration for failing to make that happen.
The statement last Thursday by Republican Rep. Joe Barton of Texas -- which was quickly retracted under pressure from House GOP leadership -- provided Democrats an opportunity to deflect growing public disenchantment with how the government was responding to the oil disaster...
And the reps are filibustering on voting to raise the cap on BP's liability above 75 million dollars. Love how the reps and tea party guys are for the people...

Barton’s apology to BP last week was cited repeatedly by the White House and Democrats in Congress as a reason why voters should reject the GOP at the polls this fall.
Two Republicans, Reps. Jeff Miller (Fla.) and Jo Bonner (Ala.), have called for Barton to step aside as the panel’s ranking member.

The Washington Post's Paul Kane reports that GOP leadership aides, who asked not to be identified in order to speak candidly, said that House GOP leaders gave Barton an ultimatum -- retract the BP apology or lose his position as ranking member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. They said he will now retain that position unless he causes further controversy.
House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio), Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) and Conference Chairman Mike Pence (R-Ind.) issued a joint statement. They said Barton's comments that that White House coerced BP into agreeing to a $20 billion fund for claims "were wrong."

BP is clearly responsible for the spill. That is a no brainer. However, it does not give our government the constitutional right to take money from them, or any private business, through extortion.
And don't be too quick to praise the dems. Just remember that BP was their BIGGEST contributor. Not to worry...the dems aren't going to burn any bridges here. The dems will cut a sweetheart deal with BP for sure.

If a private citizen had an accident with a boat which sank, or with his snow machine that went through the ice and sank into a lake, that citizen would be fined for every day that the machine is underwater polluting NY lakes with oil & gas. He would be responsible for the damage he caused.
On a much larger scale, if a business (BP for example) had an accident causing millions of gallons of crude oil to be dumped into the ocean... SOME POLITICIANS (Republican) think that BP should be exempt from paying for the cleanup. BP, like most multi-national corporations, have little regard for the American citizen or Americas laws. There is nothing to keep BP from shifting it's assets to other subsidiaries, or ghost companies (similar to the way they evade paying US income tax) then declaring that BP is bankrupt with no funds to complete the cleanup.
Thank you President Obama for protecting the American citizen instead of (the GOP) multinational companies.

Box the problem started when the Dems put a cap on the oil companies liability and let them take too many risky chances. They should have made the oil companies provide their own insurance plans with unlimited liability and then the insurance companies would make sure that the practices being used were safe. Also the insurance companies would charge a large premium based on how risky the ventures were and it may have cost too much for them to drill in water that deep. There's plenty of blame to go around on this issue from both parties.

Both parties know how this will work. BP gives the money to Obama, Obama appoints a "neutral" arbitrator. Snowing the American people that Obama's showing leadership and BP is taking responsibility for the spill. This whole thing is contrived.
Why can't the U.S. military detonate explosive around the oil well and cave it in on itself? This oil leak could be stopped, it isn't. Why?
