CNN Poll: Support for border crackdown grows
Posted: May 26th, 2010 05:30 AM ET

A new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll indicates that nearly nine out of ten Americans want to strengthen U.S. law enforcement along the border with Mexico.

Washington (CNN) – Public support for beefing up security along the U.S. border with Mexico and deporting all illegal immigrants has grown significantly, according to a new national poll.

A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey indicates that nearly nine out of ten Americans want to beef up U.S. law enforcement along the border with Mexico. The poll's Wednesday morning release comes one day after an administration official told CNN that President Barack Obama will deploy up to 1,200 more National Guard troops to the U.S. border with Mexico and will request $500 million to supplement current spending for enhanced border protection and law enforcement activities.

Forty-one percent of people questioned in the survey say all illegal immigrants currently in the country should be removed, up 15 points from 2008. And 88 percent say more federal law enforcement officials are need along the border with Mexico, up 14 points from four years ago. The poll also indicates that 54 percent back a 700-mile-long fence along the Mexican border, up nine points from 2006.

"Support for more crackdowns on employers who hire illegal immigrants is high and also on the rise, from 58 percent four years ago to 71 percent now," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "Seven in ten would support a federal ID card that everyone would have to show to an employer."

Eight in ten also support a program that would allow illegal immigrants already in the U.S. to stay here and apply for legal residency if they had a job and paid back taxes. But only 38 percent say that program should be a higher priority than border security and other get-tough proposals....................>>>>....................>>>>...............http://politicalticker.blogs.c.....cnn_politicalticker+(Blog:+Political+Ticker)&fbid=pRe3U5s34yg

The majority of people in this country including Arizona are in favor of the new law so it looks like Arizona had better find some new police chiefs that will do their job and enforce the law.

Americans are disgusted with the lack of action from the last 5 or 6 presidents on Illegal Immigration.  Every year the problem seems to get worse yet there is no solution.  SD1070 is no different.

The Arizona law doesn't solve any of the real problems and adds more controversy. If anything it makes the Illegal problem worse.

Americans support this law because it's the only game in town.  What is needed is workable FEDERAL legislation for a FEDERAL problem.

I was wrong.  I guess this is part of the education of Amercians that is needed.  I agree with Box, NO ONE wants nothing done, but it should be at the federal level.

The problem still remains that if the Federal Government doesn't do their job and secure our borders then the states have no choice but to do the job for them. The whole problem revolves around amnesty for the illegals that are already here, the Democrats don't want to secure the border unless a comprehensive immigration bill is passed which includes amnesty in it because they want the Latinos vote.

Hey....at least this got obama to get up off his a$$ and send some national guardsmen to the mexican boarder. He had to do SOMETHING since his polls are in the tank these days!

I agree that this issue has gone unattended for decades!! And all for 'votes'! SHAMEFUL!

Give Ariz. immigration law a chance, test it later

Recently, Mexican President Felipe Calderon and President Obama appeared together before the press to criticize the new Arizona immigration law [May 20 Gazette]. For reasons politically expedient I suspect, President Obama expressed their chagrin and that of many others regarding the potential the Arizona law poses for “racial profi ling.” I find those arguments curious.
We all understand that it is illegal to enter the country surreptitiously; that doing so constitutes an offense against our well-established immigration laws. As with other offenses, particularly simpler issues regarding burglary or assault, we have seldom, if ever, blanched at the routine investigative techniques employed to apprehend the offenders. Those devices most often include the circulation of descriptions and artistic composites designed to assist authorities in identifying the offenders by their physical appearance. In this situation, if unfortunately so, the offenders are consistently of Hispanic visage.
Hence, my curiosity relative to the idea of racial profiling vis-à-vis the obvious. Since that competition toward balance is the nexus of our American political experiment, I am reluctant to condemn the Arizona law.
Beyond that, however, there appears to be a “rational basis” for the measure reluctantly taken by the Arizona Legislature — that of removing a strain on its citizens’ fi nancial resources.
On the other hand, I see the liberals’ point. I am concerned about the state’s overreaching and the potential such a law or policy might allow for the trammeling upon civil rights.
Still, Arizona is on the frontline, suffering much of the blow of this illegality. It has taken a bold step toward solving a serious problem. Perhaps its new law should be given a chance. If it should fail in a serious enough way, one so egregious as to necessitate legal review, the courts will be called upon to decide its constitutionality.

WASHINGTON  (AP) - President Barack Obama's Democratic allies in the Senate have repelled a move by presidential rival John McCain to send an additional 6,000 National Guard troops to the U.S-Mexico border.

The Arizona Republican says the security situation along the order has deteriorated so badly that 3,000 guard troops are needed just to help protect his state. But McCain failed to muster the required 60 votes for his plan as the Senate continued debate on an a war funding bill.

Obama on Tuesday promised to send 1,200 Guard troops to the border to support efforts to block drug trafficking and temporarily supplement Border Patrol agents until more agents can be trained.

TRAINED????? SO MORE AGENTS CAN BE TRAINED?????

This has been an on going problem....and we are just now training more agents? And what kind of training? The same training that the national guard receives? Then just send in the national guard!  WTH?

The administration is playing politics just like all the other administrations have done before and are pandering for the Latino vote in November.

What administration would that be ? State or Fed-   I dont think Arizona  needs Federal permission to use their state's National Guard to patrol the border.

Save this country from invasion?? .. it's too late for that!! You see it's the democrats fault this time, the time before that it was the republicans fault!! Pretty soon people will run out of politicians too blame, then they can look in the mirror and assign the real blame-
