Quoted Text
The State Assembly is considering bills to expand organ donors in the state, currently last in the nation.

The two bills would work together, the first making New York the only state in the nation to adopt the model of “presumed consent.” Under the policy, physicians could remove organs from a donor over age of 18 without consulting the family. The second bill has an “opt-out clause,” giving a person the right of removal from the presumed consent system.

The package shifts the default position from non-donation to donation.

Bothers me too.  Control my health care ... let me die .. then harvest my organs.  Seems like part of a master plan to reduce the population

As far as the organ "farming," I don't mind at all. If my organs can be used to help other people, then so be it.  I'm not an organ donor on my license.  Actually, I don't even know how to be one? I guess it's on the renewal app. If I died tomorrow, I'd be happy if such a law were in place. Just my two cents.

Sounds good, until it's your healthy young son or daughter who gets into an auto accident. Your kid is in one hospital room barely hanging on to life and on another floor in the same hospital is another, waiting anxiously for that kidney, heart or liver so s/he can live.

Such a delema....what will the doctors do?????

No thanks.....I'll take my organs to the grave with me so not to put doctors in this uncompromising position! And trust me....it's done more times than not!

I have nothing against organ donation, I've signed my license to allow it, but dammit, it's my CHOICE to ALLOW it .. don't force it on me

Dont force me to do it or I'll force you to drink drain cleaner.......

This doesn't force you to do it, you can easily opt-out as easily as you opt-in.  No one is forcing you MT, it is just changing the default.

And bumble, no one trusts you.  Even the other reps on this board call you a dolt.

Sorry Bumble, I have a hard time "trusting" that that happens more times than not. My wife was an ER charge nurse for 13 years, and she's unaware of that happening.

I just resent the "default" being opt-IN ... why not make it opt OUT by default, when nearly 85%+ of NY'ers are NOT organ donors and don't intend on being ?

Because more people are likely willing to do it (case in point one of the earlier posts) if it was opt out.

I guess it doesn't make a huge impact either way, if you feel strongly about it chances are you won't be caught unaware.

My sisterinlaw was a nurse in intensive care. Believe it or not......to donate or not...........everyone makes their own call on the information they have.
