When Patton was speeding across Europe, he had a policy of creating what he called "Patton War Memorials." When he approached a village or town, if the inhabitants offered any resistance, or did not put up white flags, he leveled the town. If Wehrmacht snipers or German civilian terrorists shot at at Third Army personnel, the town was destroyed with no quarter. That is why the Continent was won in 10 months of the D-Day landing. Wars that last 20 years because of legalese and concern over "casualties" are designed to be wars that are not won.
