(CNN) -- President Obama unveiled plans Wednesday to open large swaths of U.S. coastal waters in the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico to oil and natural gas drilling -- a move likely to please the energy industry but upset the administration's environmentalist supporters.

The administration plan would include lifting a 20-year ban on drilling off the Virginia coastline, while putting the clamps on sites such as southwest Alaska's Bristol Bay. Parts of the Arctic Ocean off Alaska's North Slope, however, could be accessed.

The plan authorizes the Interior Department to conduct seismic surveys off the south- and mid-Atlantic coasts to "determine the quantity and location of potential oil and gas resources to support energy planning," according to a statement from a White House official.

What are your hopes for the environment?

Roughly two-thirds of available oil and gas resources in the eastern Gulf of Mexico would be opened to drilling if a congressional moratorium on oil and gas operations in the region is lifted, according to the statement. Drilling would occur more than 125 miles off the Florida coast.

"This is not a decision that I've made lightly," Obama told an audience at Maryland's Joint Base Andrews Naval Air Facility.

"But the bottom line is this: Given our energy needs, in order to sustain economic growth and produce jobs and keep our businesses competitive, we're going to need to harness traditional sources of fuel even as we ramp up production of new sources of renewable, homegrown energy.".................................>>>>..................>>>>.......................http://www.cnn.com/2010/POLITICS/03/31/obama.energy/index.html?hpt=Sbin

I heard on tv that they will study it first, so I'll believe it when I see it.

The only way we're ever going to have energy independence is vote the libs out of Congress and replace them with true conservatives who really want to put this country back on the right track.

We also need conservatives who are fighters like Paul Ryan, Mike Pence, Jim DeMint, Michelle Bachmann and some others.

Maybe if you check with some of your conservative friends, you might learn that  we haven't built a new oil refinery in over 25 years - and our existing refineries are working at 98 % capacity -

Look into the reason why no new refineries have been built in the last 25 years and you'll find that the environmental groups all opposed the building of any new refineries and have sued and blocked, with the help of the lib judges, so now we're at the mercy of our enemies to sell us overpriced oil l/gasoline because we can't make our own.

Exactly correct. This is clearly an environmental move. It clearly has absolutely  nothing to do with drilling to lower gas prices and be independent of OPEC. With the environmentalists involve obama will be able to push his CAP AND TRADE down our throats, all in the name of 'saving the environment'.

Hang on to your wallets folks....social security has run out SIX year before predicted.....health care is going to cost a fortune.....there are no jobs......the stimulus bill put us deeper in debt......we are in BIG trouble!

So the title of the thread is 'To Drill or Not To Drill" - I said it is  well known to everyone except this forum- that our existing refineries are OPERATING AT CAPACITY - anddid you know that after oil comes out of the ground it must go to a REFINERY  to be processed ?

Your gibberish about your political environmental war that you're talking about - was brought on partly by people using a 2,000 pound vehicle to haul their  200 pound asz around-

The point is if your green friends hadn't blocked any new refineries from being built the refineries wouldn't be operating at 95% capacity and we could handle refining more petroleum products when the demand rose instead of having to import them from the middle east.

I'm not against drilling.....I'm for it!!
However, obama and his green friends will make us pay dearly for it through 'environment friendly' taxation and fees. This is where obama's tax and cap will come into play. Remember...the 'greenie extremists' are in lock step with the dems. And the liberal socialists are all for TAX AND SPEND AND GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS!!!

Sunnie--Michelle Bachman is probably one of the most offensive people in government.  And btw she is a dumb bell.  Hard to know who is worse Bachman or Palin.  Bachman couldn't even hold her own with Keith Olberman.  She should be thrown out of office.

Sunnie do you really believe the stuff you write or are you just trying to get people to  respond to absurdity?

Most liberal socialist women don't like Bachman. She, like palin, are classy, articulate, smart, intelligent, conservative and even attractive. Liberal socialist women have the market cornered on pant suits and looking dumpy. The are full of hot air and love to spend our tax dollars.

Liberal socialist dem women give cause to why women shouldn't be in politics.

No one is blocking anything. Check your facts-  Most refineries closed between 1981 and 1995 when oil refining capacity in the US exceeded the demand.  Gasoline prices were  simply not high enough to meet the cost of operation .  ( ' Black Gold Stranglehold ' Jerome Corsi )

Sure the refineries have had to make environmentally mandated changes- mostly to produce cleaner low sulfer fuels.
Oil companies like to build refineries near coastlines to economize on transportation cost. They are obtrusive and smelly and most people dont want them in their back yard.

BT--I can't believe you made such a statement.  It's men like you that have forced women into wearing pant suits.  BTW are you Kelly Rhinesmith?  She feel exactly the way you do.  I have heard her say just that.  Glad she is on the side of Palin and Bachman and BT.
