SCHENECTADY Savage needles Farley on Senate discipline flap BY MICHAEL LAMENDOLA Gazette Reporter Reach Gazette reporter Michael Lamendola at 395-3114 or lamend@dailygazette.com.
Susan Savage, chairwoman of the Schenectady County Legislature, said she is months away from deciding whether or she will run for higher office this year. But she sounded like a candidate for state Senate on Friday. In a news release issued under the letterhead of the county Legislature, the Democrat attacked state Sen. Hugh Farley, R-Niskayuna, stating he waffled on calling for the Senate to expel Hiram Monserrate, D-Queens. On Thursday Farley told an Albany reporter he hadn’t decided how he’d vote if a resolution to expel Monserrate came to the Senate floor. On Friday, he said he would vote to expel. He said he had to first read the report prepared by a Senate committee that said Monserrate should be censured or expelled due to a domestic incident in which his girlfriend’s face was gashed with broken glass. Monserrate was acquitted of felony assault in the slashing but convicted of misdemeanor assault for dragging her afterward. A felony conviction would have brought an automatic removal from the Senate. In her news release, Savage said she was disappointed with Farley’s hesitancy. “I hope that Sen. Farley will quickly conclude what I and the other residents of the 44th State Senate District already know and that is that Sen. Monserrate must be removed from office to bring this matter to a close. Domestic violence should not be tolerated and our lawmakers in Albany must make that very clear,” she said. During a phone interview, Savage said, “My point is that it would not be a tough decision for me to make if I were a member of the state Senate.” Savage added that she issued her statement as one of several elected officials from across the state who are calling on Monserrate, a Democrat, to resign. “As a woman and the chief elected official of Schenectady County, I wanted to add my voice that Monserrate is not fi t to serve,” she said. Farley downplayed Savage’s statement and a potential matchup with her. “I am always cautiously confident about running. I can’t pick my opponent, and I have had lots of them over the years and I do the best I can. I do not attack people, that is not my style,” he said. .............>>>>....................>>>>.................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01000&AppName=1
Savage has to attack her opponents because if she runs on her record she will never get elected.
