Town residency exceptions on agenda

    Rotterdam officials are considering a pair of local laws that would allow the town attorney and confidential secretary to the supervisor to live in other communities.
    One law would remove the residency obligation for the town attorney established in 2005, while the other would absolve the confidential secretary from adhering to the requirement. Deputy Supervisor Robert Godlewski said the changes would allow the town get the “biggest bang for the buck” from both positions.
    A public hearing on both changes is set for the Town Board meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
    In the case of the confidential secretary, Godlewski said the candidate for the job is highly qualified and has connections at the state level. He said the candidate —Darlene Mullady of Rensselaer —was involved in state government for roughly 30 years.
    Mullady would replace Kim Bruhns, who was appointed to the position in 2009. Bruhns earned $39,618 with full benefits, according to a resolution passed during her appointment.
    “We have an individual here that has outstanding credentials,” he said of Mullady Thursday, declining to say whether Bruhns is still employed with the town.
    Godlewski said the town needed to look outside the borders of Rotterdam for municipal counsel because the previous administration gutted the budget for the position. The previous board reduced the initially budgeted $99,000 to $65,000 in November, despite protests from the incoming board.
    Members of the new board agreed to hire Joseph Liccardi of East Greenbush to serve as town attorney during their organizational meeting. I'm almost interested in my tax $$ being used to pay salaries to non-residents.  
Rotterdam doesn't have anyone with "outstanding credentials"?  

Rotterdam does have qualified people but they're not politically connected.

How true. Already these liberals are governing like the city of schenectady. Wonder who will replace surprise, when and if he gets the boot too? Possibly someone from guilderland?

Hey, I'm all for hiring the very best person for the job. And apparently this administration is going to need all the help it can get. But agreeing with shadow.....there is no one in Rotterdam that can fill the bill? Or are they confirming that all rotterdamians are nothing more than uneducated, redneck hick?

I would like to see them hire the most qualified person who will end up doing the best job at a reasonable salary. If the individual lives in the town then great but if he/she doesn't, I'm good with that too. IMO, it's more important to get the right person rather than where he/she lives.

We're talking about a friggin SECRETARY here folks, not a rocket scientist.

EXACTLY! But as usual it is all about politics. So much for the 'reform platform' that this crew ran on. IT IS politics as usual in rotterdam!

On the town board agenda the new confidential secretary will be getting a $10,000 stipend on top of her salary (which
of course is not listed).  The Dems (once they got in) were going to do away with stipends. The new secretary is a
friend of Mr. Delgallo's.....

By the way Mr. Surprise is not going anywhere.

I haven't seen her experience listed any where. Why don't you tell us why she isn't qualified to be a secretary.

I'm glad to see Mr. Surprise not going anywhere, it's a good reminder of what you get when the wrong people are making the decisions in Town Hall. LOL

What ever happened to the concept of support the local residents by providing them with jobs, you know the ones that live here, pay taxes here, and buy from local merchants??

Her qualifications are that she is a friend of Mr. Delgallo.

Mr. Surprise has a five year contract.

tossed in the circular file.....Oh wait, none, they had already hired her without the public hearing or taking in any
resumes from residents who may have wanted to apply for the job.

So everyone should go to this meeting and see what 'reform' really looks like!

Is Darlene's last name correct in this article?   Was this possibly a (deliberate)
mistake on the part of Bob G when giving the info to the Gazette reporter?  There is no trace of D Mullady on the internet but there is a Darlene Mullally who is/was on Assemblyman Weprin's staff.
