In a surprise, Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize

By KARL RITTER and MATT MOORE, Associated Press Writers
26 mins ago

OSLO – President Barack Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples," the Norwegian Nobel Committee said, citing his outreach to the Muslim world and attempts to curb nuclear proliferation.

The stunning choice made Obama the third sitting U.S. president to win the Nobel Peace Prize and shocked Nobel observers because Obama took office less than two weeks before the Feb. 1 nomination deadline. Obama's name had been mentioned in speculation before the award but many Nobel watchers believed it was too early to award the president.
Speculation had focused on Zimbabwe's Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, a Colombian senator and a Chinese dissident, along with an Afghan woman's rights activist.

The Nobel committee praised Obama's creation of "a new climate in international politics" and said he had returned multilateral diplomacy and institutions like the U.N. to the center of the world stage. The plaudit appeared to be a slap at President George W. Bush from a committee that harshly criticized Obama's predecessor for resorting to largely unilateral military action in the wake of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

Rather than recognizing concrete achievement, the 2009 prize appeared intended to support initiatives that have yet to bear fruit: reducing the world stock of nuclear arms, easing American conflicts with Muslim nations and strengthening the U.S. role in combating climate change.

"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," Thorbjoern Jagland, chairman of the Nobel Committee said. "In the past year Obama has been a key person for important initiatives in the U.N. for nuclear disarmament and to set a completely new agenda for the Muslim world and East-West relations."..................>>>>...................>>>>................http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/eu_nobel_peace

Maybe he should thank GW for this...since everything else during his tenure has been attributed to him!

Conservatives cheer when the USA loses the Olympics, then throw a hissy fit when the President of the USA wins the Peace Prize!

Such patriotic Americans!!!

You can blame the last 2 years of the liberal media blitz that got obama 'selected' in the first place. The liberal media depicted him as the 'savior of the world', 'mr. perfection'. Well since his election, we the people have found out otherwise. So now we are skeptical....not unpatriotic. IMHO

Obama is right up there with other "winners" Arafat, Al Gore and Jimmy Carter. What a team? Right he accomplished much in his first 16 days-lol. Did you hear about his stimulus plan?

He even admitted that he did not deserve it. My suggestion would be to have waited until the end of his term...see what exceptional accomplishments he achieved....then make the decision.

The way I see and read it, these nominations were made 2 weeks AFTER he became president. Coupled with his apologizing world tour. After his proposal of eliminating nukes in a world where countries hate and want to destroy us.

In my little opinion, it was just a 'prize' to make sure he continues on the same path that he is presently on. And in my little opinion, that is to weaken our stance in the world, make us more vulnerable and reshape our country that is more reminiscent on other countries around the world.

It appears that now he must  become the real 'global leader' at our national and individual cost. IMHO

Yeah, since he became prez, even the Taliban is no longer a threat to the West. They said so themselves.

You're right GW probably made this possible.  BECAUSE YOU COULDN'T HAVE HAD A WORSE LEADER in the free world.  Bush ruined the reputation of this country with his antics and taking us to a useless war that has caused the death of our young citizens who were brainwashed into going to war.  Not to mention the the countless innocent Iraqiis who have died because of Bush's antics.  He should be brought up on war crimes. Your Mr. Bush ruined every ounce of goodwill that was extended to this country after 911 by the rest of the world.   At least Obama has had the good sense to reach out to the Muslim world.  Apologetics--no way. Common sense. He has already improved our standing in the world the last year.  Good work Obama.  Maybe some of you right wing anger-filled war mongers can begin to see WAR IS NOT THE WAY TO PEACE.  Not in Israel, not with Iran not with Korea.  War should be the last alternative not the first as it was with your former President/idol.  Congratulations President Obama.
