Deficit? Lawmakers enjoy $11 a day boost
Albany per diems in Legislature hit $171 although prices are down due to the recession

ALBANY -- Times are tough all over, and state government is no exception. The work force is shrinking through attrition, and Gov. David Paterson says $3 billion must be cut from this year's budget. In state agencies, workers are being ordered to use teleconferences rather than travel for face-to-face meetings, and even the paper clips are being counted.So how is the Legislature reacting?
Its members will be receiving higher per diems, the stipends they get for travel expenses such as hotels and meals outside their home districts.

Starting this month, lawmakers staying in Albany will get $171 per day, up from $160 -- an increase of nearly 7 percent.

They'll get that amount no matter how much they spend. If their meal and hotel costs are lower, they keep the change. (Expenses for transportation -- such as train tickets or car mileage -- are reimbursed separately..................>>>>............................>>>>..................
