The widow of the late U.S. Rep. Samuel S. Stratton, and the mother of Schenectady mayor Brian U. Stratton, died early Monday morning, Schenectady's director of operations, Sharon Jordan, said.
Joan Stratton, whose husband served in the House of Representatives for 30 years, had moved decades ago to the Washington, D.C. area with her family. Stratton, who had five children, was in her late 80s. Brian Stratton left to be with her on Saturday as his mother's health was failing.
Details about funeral arrangements have not been released, but Jordan said a wake will be held Thursday, and the service will be Friday.
Sam Stratton died in 1990 of a heart attack. A fixture in Capital Region politics, he was a champion for national defense programs, first winning his Schenectady-Amsterdam seat in 1958. He was the first Democrat to hold the post in 42 years. Michael McNulty, D-Green Island, was appointed to succeed Stratton seat in 1989.
