New appliance
rebate plan
due late Nov.

ALBANY — New York wants your old home appliances, and it’s willing to give you money to replace them.
In November, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority will launch a program that allows people to trade in old home appliances and receive a rebate to buy Energy Star qualified appliances.
The state has $18.7 million for the effort, which it is calling the New York State Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program. The money is coming from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The federal Department of Energy is giving nearly $300 million to states and territories for the Cash for Appliances program. New York’s share is based on a formula.
NYSERDA spokeswoman Colleen Ryan said the state is still developing the incentives. “We need to submit a comprehensive plan to the DOE by Oct. 15. Once it is approved, we will develop and open the program to the public in November,” she said.
Ryan said the state will not accept any applications for the program until at least November.
Products covered by the program include central air conditioners, heat pumps, boilers, oil and gas furnaces, room air conditioners, clothes washers, dishwashers, freezers, refrigerators and water heaters.
