AARP Takes Flak Over Health Stand
Submitted by Anna Tomova on Fri, 08/21/2009 - 11:37. Featured News Health United States

American Association for Retired Persons (AARP) believes the U. S. health care needs to be completely overhauled, however, a lot of its members seem to agree, which puts the 40-million-strong organization of older Americans in a fix, as it fields calls from worried seniors and battles rumours about President Barack Obama's healthcare proposal, which it supports.
Rick Mayes, a Public Policy Professor at the University of Richmond and who once worked for AARP says the organisation has always walked this same tightrope i. e. trying not to rile one group, even while they are players pushing for progressive reforms.
And while, Obama says AARP backs his healthcare reforms knowing a good deal for seniors when they see one, a recent Wall Street Journal / NBC News poll reveals
46% of the 65-plus are against Obama's health plan, with only 28% in favour of it.
AARP concedes it has lost 60,000 members, many of whom have resigned since 1st July over pushing the health-care plan............>>>>...........>>>>...........http://visitbulgaria.info/11074-aarp-takes-flak-over-health-stand

But the rest of the story goes something like this:

The approximately 60,000 number represents members who specifically cited AARP's stance on the health overhaul debate in canceling their membership between July 1 and mid-August AARP also said that on average AARP loses some 300,000 members a month, but he couldn't say how many more members had quit for other reasons in that time period.

AARP gained some 400,000 new members during the same period and that 1.5 million members renewed their membership-

They will lose millions of members when the seniors understand that the AARP favors Obamacare.

Obama keeps lying about "keeping your private plan". Once the government "option" starts millions will be pushed into it whether they want it or not. Obamacare calls for huge cuts in Medicare which will further weaken senior care. Of course Rep Tonko {D-Amsterdam} strongly FAVORS horrid Obamacare, so what if he hasn't read the bill? He will keep is separate Congressional gold plated plan. You can fend for yourself.

I don't believe a single thing that this administration says because they have not lived up to their campaign promises about transparent government, no lobbyists influencing government, not going to raise taxes, cut taxes for for everyone but the rich, and they're going to unite the country. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. When you serve on a jury the judge tells you if you find out that a witness has lied you can disregard their whole testimony, that's how I feel about this administration.

Well fine- I don't believe a single thing posted on this board- The AARP card alone gives you 10- 15 % off stuff all day long.  No senior in their right mind is going to tear up that card- seniors are the tightest of the tightwads

That is exactly why they join. NOT for the socialist politics.

I joined AARP about 5 years ago. I was a member for 6 only months. I did like their monthly magazine. It was very informative. There was nothing else that I found beneficial. The car insurance they offered was definitely cheaper but it didn't match my coverage. I also did not find a significant benefit for prescriptions. Now this is just based on my experiences and needs. Others may find their options more beneficial. I didn't.

if you have to be 55 or over to join, and it has 40million members if you say people live to 75  that means AARP loses 166 thousand a month to death...

*shrugs*

ah it's 50, so it's 133,000

I don't spell check!  Sorry...
If you include "No offense" in a statement, chances are, your statement is offensive.

Shame on seniors for putting themselves on political podium for politicians to bat around like a ping-pong and for AARP to be their
shop boss.....
