Gazette staff earn 18 AP awards

The Daily Gazette earned 18 awards in the annual New York State Associated Press Association contest, more than twice the number from a year ago.
Winners announced Thursday in the writing competition for newspapers with circulations of 25,000 to 50,000 included:
The Gazette staff, 2nd place in spot news for ice storm coverage.
Reporter Kathleen Moore, honorable mention in features for “The Blythwood.”
Sunday writer Sara Foss, 3rd place in features for “White noses.”
Sports writer Morgan Lyle, 3rd place in sports columns for “Fly fishing.”
Sports writer Mike MacAdam, 2nd place in sports columns for “A Seat in the Bleachers.”
Opinion editor Art Clayman, 3rd place in editorials for “Schenectady school troubles.”
The Gazette staff, 3rd place in depth reporting for “Outlook 2009.”
Reporter Kathleen Moore, honorable mention in continuing coverage for her reports on the Schenectady police.
Reporter Kathleen Moore, 2nd place in beat reporting for coverage of the Schenectady High School suicides.
The Gazette staff, 3rd place in brightest headline for “Baseball promotion has mayors shaking heads.”
Arts writer Wendy Liberatore, 1st place in arts/entertainment for dance criticism.
Sunday writer Sara Foss, honorable mention in blogging for “Foss Forward.”
Sports writer Phil Janack, 3rd place in blogging for “Phil-ing in the Blanks.”
Arts writers Brian McElhiney and Mike Hochanadel, 2nd place in niche Web site for “Live in the Clubs.”
In the non-spot news presentation category, editor Jeffrey Haff took 3rd place with “Stockade doors.”
In the photography competition for newspapers with circulations under 50,000:
Gazette photographer Peter Barber earned first-place and second-place honors in the spot news category for his photos, “I need help” and “Futile attack.”
Gazette photographer Barry Sloan received an honorable mention in features for “Capsizing.”
