This letter is in response to the Aug. 12 article [“New school board member stepping down”] about the resignation of Joyce Wachala from the Schenectady Board of Education, so that she could care for her 3-year-old son who has contracted Type I diabetes. Ms. Wachala, it is regrettable that you had to resign. It is particularly regrettable since it is people like you who provide the only hope that the school board can renounce its arbitrary, imperious ways and become responsive to the people once more. Nevertheless, I fully understand the necessity for you to spend more family time. I, too, am a Type I diabetic, and I, too, became one at the age of 3. My mother had to radically remake her life to get mine on track and raise me to care for myself. My father was also affected. But it can be done! I went on to become a pretty good musician in high school, spending two summers playing viola at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Mich. I then went to college, graduate school and law school, and spent 38 productive years as a chemical patent attorney before retiring in 1998. I’m now 74 years old and healthy. My diabetes has always been a challenge, but I’ve managed to live with it pretty successfully. I wish your son the same good fortune, and I wish you the best in your efforts to point him in the right direction.
Re Aug. 18 article, “Ousted member back on board”: Audacity: (definition) bold or arrogant. Example: Schenectady board of education, with the exception of its newest member, Ms. [Diane] Herrmann. The fact that the already laughable and dysfunctional Schenectady school board is yet again making headlines — because they deem it in the best interest of the city to go against the voting public’s wishes and appoint a former board member who was voted out in the previous election — quite frankly demonstrates the arrogance that exists on this board. The public made a statement in the past election, which was that they were not happy with the ways of the board, and they utilized the democratic process to elect fresh new faces. With various options available to replace Ms. Wachala [after she resigned], Mr. Janiszewski and his cronies decided to yet again slap the voters in the face. Enough is enough. When voters speak through elections, you should listen. We no longer wanted Ms. Bellick and we made it known. How dare you bring her back for your own agenda and disregard the votes of the people of this city. The audacity! Shame on you. Thank you, Ms. Herrmann, for all your efforts and please keep standing up to all of them until the voters’ wishes come to fruition and we get them all out.

Two local school boards are taking very different approaches to filling seats that unexpectedly became vacant this summer.
While the Schenectady school board chose to reappoint a former member who lost in May's election, Guilderland's school board is seeking public input as it moves to fill a vacant seat.
Guilderland is accepting letters of interest to fill the seat of longtime board member John Dornbush, who died of cancer July 8. The Guilderland school board will ask all candidates questions at a special public meeting Sept. 16 that will be broadcast on local cable access television. The Guilderland board will make its appointment Oct. 6.
Schenectady school board vice president and newcomer Diane Herrmann advocated to fill her board's vacancy the same way, saying an open process is critical given recent controversies in the district, including the arrest and indictment of former facilities supervisor Steven Raucci. District officials have refused to release their internal report concerning the district's possible knowledge of Raucci's alleged activities.
In both Guilderland and Schenectady, any new board member appointed would have to run in May to fill the remainder of the term. In Schenectady, the term runs until 2012; in Guilderland it is until 2011.
Schenectady's vacancy on its seven-member board comes after another newcomer, Joyce Wachala, who won in May after running on a platform of transparency along with Herrmann, abruptly resigned this month, citing health concerns regarding her son.
But four of the six school board members said a public process would appear fixed if they ended up selecting their favored choice, former school board member Linda Bellick, who Wachala beat in May by about 500 votes. The school board will vote on reappointing Bellick at Wednesday night's meeting.
Guilderland school board member Colleen O'Connell said her board briefly discussed reaching out to former school board members to fill the vacancy on the nine-member panel. But that idea was quickly abandoned in favor of an open process, she said. The Guilderland board never considered unilaterally appointing either of the two candidates who lost in the May election.
According to state law, Guilderland must fill the seat before next May's election, O'Connell said. As a small city district, Schenectady could legally keep its seat vacant but has chosen not to do so. Both boards decided against special elections because of the cost, about $6,000 to $9,000 for each election.
"We were pretty much in agreement that we just wanted the process to be as transparent as possible," said O'Connell. "I'd like to think (John) would be proud of the way we're doing it."
Herrmann took shots at her school board colleagues last week, saying they're not taking the May election results seriously and are "laughing at the voters." Great letter from Mr. Hoover. The idiots on the SCSB don't care, know they are finished if they ever seek re-election and are busy increasing administrative salaries and extending contracts. They don't care about either the students or taxpayers. The City sheeple have finally had enough and are organizing. It's not just The Mad Bomber; the closure of Howe School and huge busing/personnel costs are also raising eyebrows.
The County Legislature is also bad but have so far escaped the hot media spotlight. Jiffy Jeffy and his crew don't realize that things have changed and the best thing they can do is leave now.

Nobody cares-everyone thinks that the City schools are horrible-School taxes sickening-and the school bored pathetic. When you try to sell your property no one with school aged kids will look. There will be fireworks at the next meeting on Tuesday at the Black Box Theatre@SHS. Then we shall see.
This "open" process is more manure. Very few qualified people want anything to do with this. Whether it's 5-2 or 6-1 nothing will change until next May. Expect more contract extension and pay raises to the usual suspects.

It’s true. Tomorrow night the Schenectady school board plans to bring back by appointment a former member, Linda Bellick, who was trounced by the voters in May. This is to fill the vacancy created by the surprise resignation of one of the two candidates who prevailed in that election, Joyce Wachala. The board could call a special election to fill the seat for the modest cost of $8,700; it could leave the seat vacant until next May, which would not affect the balance of power, since the group led by Jeff Janiszewski would still be in control; or it could follow the example of Guilderland and invite candidates to apply and then question them in public as a guide to making an appointment. But the Schenectady board — meaning the Janiszewski-led majority — chose the way that demonstrates maximum contempt for the people they purport to serve, and I trust no one is surprised. SCHENECTADY — The Board of Education is expected Wednesday to appoint former board member Linda Bellick to a vacant seat and adopt a new strategic plan for the district. The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre of Schenectady High School. Bellick takes over the seat left vacant when Joyce Wachala resigned earlier this month to care for her diabetic child. A majority of the board favored bringing back Bellick, a three-term veteran, when it discussed the matter at a study session last week. Bellick finished last in the field of four candidates in May’s election. The board had the option of leaving the seat vacant until May 2010, holding a new election or appointing someone to the seat. Bellick would have to run again in May to stay on the board. School Attorney Shari Greenleaf explained last week that there will be three seats up for election next year. The top two vote-getters will receive three-year terms and the third-place finisher will get the two-year seat — the rest of Wachala’s original term. Superintendent Eric Ely said the new five-year strategic plan is focused on how to improve student achievement levels, how to use data to assess student learning and improve instruction and how to tailor appropriate curriculum. Just when you think the contemptuous Schenectady Board of Education members are done thumbing their noses at taxpayers, they come back on stage for another encore.
You may recall, especially if you're a taxpayer in this beleaguered city, that last spring voters defeated a school budget with a 5.8 percent tax increase. Board members, not giving a damn about majority rule, came back with a contingency budget 10 percent higher than the defeated one.
Next comes a board vacancy. People I spoke with said the vacancy should be filled either by special election or left empty until the next election. Instead, this school board is going to appoint the last place finisher in last May's vote.
Don't forget, this is the same school board -- except for newcomer Diane Herrmann -- that did nothing to stop the tactics of alleged bomber/terrorist Steve Raucci.
Only in Schenectady. Hey folks, you can't make up all this stuff.
