Some people believe in the old expression "dogs are man's best friend,'' but through the years I've known politicians who found out otherwise while campaigning door to door.The latest casualty was Judy Dagostino, a Schenectady County legislator running for another four-year term in the November election. When a Rotterdam homeowner opened the door, a large husky darted out and nipped Dagostino's granddaughter's chin. Then, the dog ran past the girl and bit Dagostino on the forearm.
The victims were the mother and daughter of Rotterdam Police Lt. Dom Dagostino, who was campaigning on a nearby block. He's running for sheriff in the fall election.
"While my daughter just got nipped, my mother's arm suffered a more serious injury,'' Dagostino said. "But my mom is tough. She was in the lineup the next time we went out on the campaign trail.''
Several people who have campaigned with me have been scratched by dogs. Last Saturday, I was peed on by a dog. Wasn't sure what message was intended. I can only surmise who put the dog up to it.
Seems that at nearly every house, there are one or more dogs of various size, shape and temperament.
I too hope Judy and her granddaughter are fine. Dogs are the biggest problem while on the campaign trail. Gee Brad....what was that dog thinking, peeing on you like that.
