Technology — TV and text messages — will be the death of us
Television was introduced as a medium with limitless educational potential, but quickly proved to be nothing more than a means for middle-class Americans to escape the banality of their existences. What started with game shows and soap operas has evolved to a point where even news broadcasts have no integrity. The Internet was also lauded for its educational potential, but has now degenerated into an akashic record of sorts for humanity’s lust and self-preoccupation, with billions of pornographic pages and millions of people trolling social networking sites. The constant connection that the cellphone gives to society ultimately detracts from the user’s sense of self. The ultimate manifestation of the disassociative effect of technology is text messaging, the oversimplified nature of which lends itself more to vapid chit-chat than the intensive, abstract communication possible in conversation. The end result of all of it is that we are distracted, which is how the people who created the technology want us to be. The world is so filled with noise, media and people that it grows hard to focus. Technology, which once represented the potential to improve our living conditions, now represents the cyber-reality we have created to drown our malaise with the world we live in. Instead of empowering us, technology reinforces our insignificance in the larger world and makes us less disposed to do anything about it. These are either the symptoms of a decaying society or of one that is restructuring to implement a smaller, more exclusive nucleus of power. Our thoughts and ideas are what propel us ahead in life, and modern society’s renunciation of them is tantamount to a death wish. We have written our own eulogy in text messages and game shows.
perhaps we should go back to the days before electricity all together. Technology is their to improve our lives and enhance our abilities to communicate. those social network sites allow for people to keep in touch with old classmates and so on.
the problem this guy has is with peoples morals and not technology. Families use to get together and listen to radio shows, or watch howdy doody, family movie night, whatever. It is the degeneration of the moral fabric and traditional family setting that is ruining this country not the technology.
thank god for dictionary.com so i could look up some of the words that guy used - tantamount, anakashic, banality
There has been negative influences on society since the beginning of time. Perhaps Mr. Woodward should take a lesson in 'personal responsibility'....cause that is what it all boils down to.

Some day, these computers we sit at, will be obsolete and replaced with even newer technology. If we should live so long!
