CAPITAL REGION — After getting off to a rocky start on Friday, the federal “Cash for Clunkers” program quickly began to attract customers, two local car dealers said Monday. Spokesmen for Capitaland Motors on Route 50 in Glenville and Mohawk Honda at 756 State St., Schenectady, said they sold four and five cars, respectively, over the last three days. They categorized the sales as in addition to regular sales and to customers who would not have purchased a vehicle were it not for the Car Allowance Rebate System, or CARS. “There’s definitively an interest,” said James Goyette, general manager of Mohawk Honda, a family-owned dealership celebrating its 90th year. The program is scheduled to run through Nov. 1. It may end earlier should the $1 billion appropriated for it run out before then. Dealers said it took them hours to register for the program Friday. Patricia Swift-Oladeinde, a spokeswoman for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, confirmed the delays. Under CARS, people can qualify for a government incentive of $3,500 or $4,500 to buy or lease a new vehicle by turning in a used vehicle with a combined average fuel economy rating of 18 miles per gallon or less. The program is designed to energize the economy, boost auto sales and put safer, cleaner and more fuel-efficient vehicles on the nation’s roadways, according to the Web site CARS.gov. John McEleney, chairman of the National Automobile Dealers Association, said he expects the program to succeed in boosting vehicle sales and the nation’s economy. “The federal incentive of up to $4,500, coupled with automaker rebates and the auto sales tax deduction, puts a new vehicle within reach for many American families,” McEleney said. Just remember, though, that the federal government has no money. That being said, the $4,500 that you are receiving doing this is coming out of somebody else's pocket. Also, this won't necessarily improve the MPG over all, considering you could turn in your vehicle that only gets 18 MPG and get something like a heavy duty work truck that only gets, as an example, 15 MPG. There are no restrictions on how you can spend the money you're taking from others (including me). How much you want to bet they go through the money quick, then decide this program can't die, so they add more in federal gas taxes, bringing us to the previously mentioned goal of $4 to $5 per gallon they wanted?
Actually, Salvatore, I never said that and don't put words in my mouth. The fact is that this does not guarantee what you are saying I'm standing against. It only makes sure old cars with low gas mileage get off the roads. It does nothing to prevent new gas guzzlers that are going to be driven 100's of thousands of miles from now from getting on the road, and then there's the fact that nobody's ever been able to prove global warming. WASHINGTON — The government plans to suspend its popular “cash for clunkers” program amid concerns it could quickly use up the $1 billion in rebates for new car purchases, congressional officials said Thursday. The Transportation Department called lawmakers’ offices to alert them to the decision to suspend the program at midnight Thursday. The program offers owners of old cars and trucks $3,500 or $4,500 toward a new, more fuel-efficient vehicle. The congressional officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. Rae Tyson, a spokesman for the National Highway Traffi c Safety Administration, which administers the program, declined comment. A White House official said later that officials were assessing the situation facing the popular program but auto dealers and consumers should have confidence that transactions under the program that already have taken place would be honored. Congress last month approved the Car Allowance Rebate System program, known as CARS, to boost auto sales and remove some inefficient cars and trucks from the roads. The program kicked off last Friday and was heavily publicized by car companies and auto dealers. Through late Wednesday, 22,782 vehicles had been purchased through the program and nearly $96 million had been spent. But dealers raised concerns about large backlogs in the processing of the deals in the government system, prompting the suspension. A survey of 2,000 dealers by the National Automobile Dealers Association found about 25,000 deals had not yet approved by NHTSA, or nearly 13 trades per store. Another Obama Plan? This is pulling thousands of low priced cars off the market (to be destroyed) hurting poor people. The dealers are not getting repaid on a timely basis hurting them. But the Gazetto thinks it's a great plan? LOL!

The last dealership in the City will be fleeing. More renaissance news? Maybe Death Ray can make them an offer they can't refuse to relocate to Broadway? With your tax dollars? lol.

The House passed emergency legislation Friday approving an additional $2 billion for the "cash for clunkers" program, whose immediate popularity this week threatened to sink the fledgling program.
Skipping over regular procedure to obtain an immediate floor vote, House Democrats' presented a bill that would shuffle around funds from the Recovery and Reinvestment Act, an emergency stimulus for the original $1 billion budget for rebates on new cars that lawmakers worried had been exhausted in only a week. The bill passed 316-109.
President Obama said he was "very pleased" that lawmakers had moved quickly to save the program, but Republicans blasted the speed of the vote, accusing Democrats of jamming the legislation through. The bill includes hand-written marks on its margins, a sign of the haste in which the legislation was written.
