Could the Gazette be re-thinking their strategy of charging before their 8/3/09 change?

Today's poll and DOZENS of negative online feedback comments suggest that might be happening: http://www.dailygazette.com/polls/2009/jul/content_0730/results/

More "I don't give a sh*t" attitude from the Gazette:

“Your paper is going to lose readers,” someone told me, and that was when I realized that, from a business standpoint, non-paying readers are pretty much worthless.

While that's true, a lot of people also won't be saying "I saw it in the Gazette".  Advertisers remember things like that.

Now, I’m just a nobody at an upstate paper, but this is the sort of crap that makes me think big national papers are more likely to lead the rest of us off a cliff than to the promised land. To this day, these papers refuse to own up to the fact that what’s really destroying newspapers isn’t the Internet, but their greedy corporate owners, who grew accustomed to profit margins of 20 to 30 percent — profit margins that were nice while they lasted, but ultimately unsustainable.
I’m sorry, but maybe an industry that chose to worship at the altar of companies such as Gannett and Scripps-Howard deserves the pain it’s getting now. (The Gazette remains a family business.)

Ok...so if it is the greedy corporate owners that are destroying newspapers....then what could be destroying the gazette, which has also grown accustomed to their profit margins? They obviously laid off staff so they could ALSO maintain their profit margins, and the 'family' could still live in the lap of luxury. I'm not saying that is right or wrong, since this is a capitalistic nation. But who is calling the kettle black here?

The internet or lack of advertising is not what is causing the downfall of the gazette. (anyone have to put an obit in the paper lately?) EXPENSIVE! It is their bias slant on issues. They have veered off of what journalism is. People are NOT stupid, like some would like us to think. The paper continues to be the cheerleader for a city that is crumbling around us, yet barely mentions how it is one of the highest taxed counties in the country. How the plex is failing. How the dss building's location was a poor choice. How many non-profits we taxpayer support in this county. Not to mention their total lack of 'investigative reporting' with out the slant. Not to mention how they hand pick what, how and when opinions get printed...if they ever even make it into print. Add the increase in crime and lack of jobs and you have a perfect storm for failure. However, the gazette continues to print the non-essential fluff.

And they continue to print articles from other areas that have their own paper. Here's a suggestion that would save them time and money. DON'T regurgitate news from areas that already have their own paper. And DON'T print anything from the AP that is already either all over the internet and is broadcasted in minutes on fox, cnn, msnbc....etc..

Perhaps the Gazette should go to a weekend only publication. Do news 7 days on their website (regurgitated/slanted as usual) but only print on Sat/Sun - or Fri/Sat/Sun. That'd get the advertising $, reduce newsprint costs, reduce staffing/insurance/liability, extend the life of the presses, etc.

How about thinking outside the box?

just another nail in the coffin! Too bad! Perhaps the city or the plex will offer them a bail out, huh? Hey nothing would surprise me anymore.

Right-BT-Love the bit tale that Judy overheard somebody running to the computer. Think she'd be over joyed that anyone reads that dreck? Online readership=paid subscibers. Maybe stuna "Fix Erie Now" should pay more for their online ad-that everyone laughed at?

To Mr. March the town reporting ain't so hot either. Everything slanted to make Metrograft look good and conservatives bad. Penny is too much for mindless cheerleading. Can read Sal for that.

To County Resident-right on and we will continue to bring breaking political, financial and planning news to this site. Read it here now-Gazetto maybe in 3 weeks?

Well, it looks like Judy was wrong ... again.

The "subscription" concept started a day early: http://dailygazette.com/news/2009/aug/01/0802_biketrip/

http://dailygazette.com/news/2009/jul/28/0729_change/

Even old stories are locked behind a subscription link.  All your links to stories in the Gazette are now essentially dead except for a 1 or 2 line tease.

Obituaries have also been removed from their site.

Nice job listening to your feedback there Judy, well done.  You've sealed the fate of a once great local newspaper.
