Schumer seeking more education for young drivers Thursday, July 23, 2009 By Justin Mason (Contact) Gazette Reporter
CAPITAL REGION — Jessica Canfield had her driver’s license for less than six months when her 2003 Hyundai Elantra veered into the path of a delivery truck on Route 30 in the rural Montgomery County town of Florida. State police later determined that the 16-year-old Ballston Spa High School cheerleader was traveling too fast to navigate a curve in the road and her tires sank into the soft earthen shoulder. When she tried to correct her mistake, her vehicle struck the southbound tractor trailer head-on. The November 2007 accident hospitalized passengers 15-year-old Stephanie Ippoliti and 11-year-old Corey Martin, Canfield’s stepsister, who was paralyzed in the crash. Canfield was pronounced dead at the scene, becoming one of 97 Capital Region teens to be killed in motor vehicle accidents over the past five years. Investigators later determined that the fatal accident resulted partially from Canfield’s inexperience behind the wheel. U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer is hoping that a piece of legislation he is proposing to bolster the driving skills of young motorists will help prevent these kinds of fatal accidents. Schumer’s bill would ask the U.S. Department of Transportation to develop a curriculum that would enable young drivers to continue learning even after securing their driver’s license. Once this curriculum is established, the federal government would provide grants to establish free community-based courses aimed at preventing accidents among all drivers but specifically targeted at reducing the frequency of crashes among inexperienced motorists. “The number of teenagers tragically killed in automobile accidents clearly indicates that drivers’ education should not simply end once teens get their licenses,” he said Wednesday. “This legislation will provide extended access to protective environments for new drivers to gain experience on the road.” Schumer said driver education may prepare a student to pass their road test, but it fails to provide sufficient real-world driving experiences. He said the courses also don’t train fledgling drivers for the emotional maturity they need to prevent accidents. ................>>>>................>>>>.............http://www.dailygazette.com/news/2009/jul/23/0723_drivers/
Who cares what this idiot proposes? How about more ethics education for Senators? He should follow his friend Chris Dodd {D-CT} and get booted out of the Senate. Write in someone if the REPS can't field an electable candidate.
Did you hear Upchuck Schumer last night? Happy that an amendment that would have allowed those with legal carry permits to cross state lines did not get 60 votes? It got 58 Senators which means many thinking DEMS supported it. He dragged newbie Gillenbrand to the losing side which means she's finished next Nov.
But all illegal aliens and third world welfare sponges can show up here, walk in and get a license like they are buying a pack of smokes simply by being from a differnt culture and "immigrants." Natural born Americans have to take courses, tests, wait, take more courses. Who is sick of this crap?
"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."
Is Schumer saying that more teens have died in auto accidents than adults have in the last 5 years?

No, it's just a bigger sob story. Gotta call his office and let him know that the federal government has no right telling NY State what it needs to tell it's drivers, no matter what age they are.
he is a good senator doing a good job to keep our kids safe
Parents should be keeping their kids safe not the bloated Federal government. Upchuck Schumer is a disgrace to this State-like Gov. Paterson. There is not one aspect of your life he doesn't want to regulate,
Upchuck also has a concealed weapon permit-but doesn't want you to get one. Absolutely sickening. The only reason to call his office is demand his immediate resignation.
Also, if the state decides when a person can get their license, how can the federal government say what they need to do before they get it? That's not a federal issue, it's a state's right issue.

That's that living, breathing document that's open to interpretation, depending on who's in office, right? No set rights, just depends on who has the throne at the top of the hill?

It NEVER depends on the 'who's' in office.....it depends on the conversation between that office, each wing and the people......
...you are a product of your environment, your environment is a product of your priorities, your priorities are a product of you......
The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.
STOP BEING GOOD DEMOCRATS---STOP BEING GOOD REPUBLICANS--START BEING GOOD AMERICANS
Schumer today is discussing pushing for passenger's bill of rights for people stuck on planes. Keeping people sitting on planes a long time is more important than keeping illegals out.
