SCHENECTADY — City police are investigating an attack on Albany Street near Brandywine Avenue, where the suspects allegedly lighted a woman on fire before fleeing the scene. Investigators were en route to the Albany Medical Center Hospital with the victim, who suffered burns to her back, shoulders and side of her face, according to city Police Det. Kevin Green. The incident was first reported around 7:45 p.m. behind the Planned Parenthood building on State Street. “We attempted to talk to her, but she was in a lot of pain,” he said from the scene. About a half-hour later, police issued an all-points bulletin to be on the look out for a tan 1997 Toyota Camry and a gray 1990 Dodge Colt, which witnesses saw fleeing the scene of the attempted robbery, according to scanner reports. SCHENECTADY - A Schenectady woman who was set on fire Wednesday night after an argument on Albany Street is being treated at the burn unit at Westchester Medical Center.
A hospital official said the woman was in surgery this afternoon.
Law enforcement officials and others familiar with the case identified the victim as 39-year-old Amy Gilroy. Detectives are trying to determine the motive.
It is not the first time Gilroy has been hospitalized by an attacker. She was seriously injured when another woman stabbed her in March 1989.
No arrests have been made in the attack, which occurred about at 7:45 p.m. The incident took place on Albany Street, between Brandywine Avenue and Backus Street.
Witnesses told police they heard yelling and arguing just before the attack. It was not clear if her clothing was set ablaze or if gas or some other accelerant was used.
Some neighbors said they believed the attacker used lighter fluid. One person described the scene as horrific.
"I ran up to her to ask what happened but she just kept yelling, 'It's so hot, it's so hot'," said Crystal Dzintars, who knew the victim and hopes to visit her in the hospital.
When Dzintars, 25, walked down Albany Street Wednesday night, the victim was sitting on the ground. Her hair was singed and firefighters were pouring water down her back.
Detective Kevin Green said Gilroy suffered burns to her back, shoulders and one side of her face. Paramedics were working on her when police arrived and she was immediately taken by ambulance to Albany Medical Center Hospital. Gilroy was later taken to the downstate burn unit.
Police patrols combed the area today for two vehicles, which witnesses said were spotted leaving the scene of the attack. Police had one of those vehicles stopped and were questioning the car's occupants.
why is it they focus the things on a couple of bad incidentts rather then the bigger picture were things are greatly improving in the city over there.
