Disturbing incident
Marv Cermak

Some Union College students have been robbed and assaulted on nearby city streets during recent times, but the campus itself has been pretty much a safe haven at least until last week.

Schenectady Police Sgt. Eric Clifford confirmed that a 22-year-old graduate student was mugged on campus at 9:33 p.m. July 13. Several college employees told me the student from the Czech Republic was jumped by eight to 10 youths who stole his cellphone and wallet. The student was treated by firefighter paramedics apparently for minor injuries.

What's real scary about the incident is that it happened in heart of the campus, just a chip shot from the signature Nott Memorial. I've walked the campus at night frequently for the past half-dozen years without seeing a single crime. Union is sandwiched between Goose Hill and Eastern Avenue neighborhoods that police describe as having pockets of real problem people. Some of these thugs use the college route to walk or bike between the two areas.

...you are a product of your environment, your environment is a product of your priorities, your priorities are a product of you......

The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.
