Town hopes to cultivate local farmers market

    Princetown is looking for a few good farmers to share the bounty of their labor.
    The town’s civic and historic committee is hoping to attract a number of area agricultural businesses for a farmers market at Town Hall on Aug. 8. Committee member Mary-Sue Reed said the event is part of the town’s observance of Schenectady County’s year-long bicentennial celebration.
    The committee is looking to attract both residents and farmers alike for the one-time event next month. More specifically, Reed said they’re hoping to have participation from the many farms that surround the county’s border with Montgomery County and Schoharie County.
    “We’re trying to attract the local farmers to come and participate,” she said Monday.
    The event will be a litmus test to see if there’s enough interest to have a regular farmers market in Princetown. If there are enough farmers and residents willing to participate in such an event, Reed said the town might consider hosting a monthly market.
    Indian House Farm, a produce farm specializing in sweet corn located off Giffords Church Road, has already agreed to participate in the event. Now Reed is hoping to attract many more.
    “People are interested in buying locally now, and we’d love to give them the opportunity to do that,” she said.
