It appears Senator Kirsten Gillibrand will face a serious primary challenge for her Senate seat.

Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney has decided to take on Gillibrand in the 2010 Democratic primary, according to Paul Blank, who will serve as a senior adviser to Maloney’s campaign.

Democratic leaders have been trying to clear the field of challengers to Gillibrand, who was appointed by Governor David Paterson to take over Hillary Clinton’s vacated seat.

President Barack Obama persuaded Long Island Congressman Steve Israel not to enter the Senate race.

Maloney, who has served in Congress since 1993 for Manhattan’s East Side and some of Queens, is expected to make an official announcement in two weeks.

I hope Guillibrand gets beaten in the next election for being a turncoat and turning her back on the people who elected her so she could side with the likes of Upchuck Schumer.

I couldn't agree more! I don't think Gillibrand has a shot this time around. It was political suicide for her! She was clearly out of her element! IMHO

The best news of the day. Upchuck Schumer is also getting a primary. Hooray! Make them waste money and time so the REPS can take 2 Senate seats in this State.

The fact that Sal is upset speaks volumes. A REP tidal wave is coming in 2010. Obama is dropping in polls like a rock. Now if only SS Savage can get a primary? We can pray.

Maloney says in a statement to be released Friday that she plans to stay in the House of Representatives. She says her decision was based on a desire to deal with current challenges including health care reform, clean energy issues and the economy.
