The Transportation Security Administration has moved beyond just checking for weapons and explosives. It’s now training airport screeners to spot anything suspicious, and then honoring them when searches lead to arrests for crimes like drug possession and credit-card fraud.

But two court cases in the past month question whether TSA searches—which the agency says have broadened to allow screeners to use more judgment—have been going too far.

A federal judge in June threw out seizure of three fake passports from a traveler, saying that TSA screeners violated his Fourth Amendment rights against unreasonable search and seizure. Congress authorizes TSA to search travelers for weapons and explosives; beyond that, the agency is overstepping its bounds, U.S. District Court Judge Algenon L. Marbley said.

Two recent court cases question whether TSA searches have been going too far.

“The extent of the search went beyond the permissible purpose of detecting weapons and explosives and was instead motivated by a desire to uncover contraband evidencing ordinary criminal wrongdoing,” Judge Marbley wrote.

It makes no sense for GM to close Salisbury

    Re July 1 article, “Salisbury Chevrolet liquidating”: Why is Salisbury Chevrolet closing its doors? Is it because they are located in a suburban area or because GM is shortsighted? I say it is due to the mismanagement that got Detroit into this mess to begin with.
    Who is the rocket scientist who decided to cut loose the No. 3 volume dealer in upstate New York? It is this kind of management that led GM to bankruptcy.
    And where is our local government when small business needs support? Why aren’t the town and the county pulling out all the stops to help an established (57-year-old) business? Just think of the sales tax revenue that Schenectady County is losing as a result.
    Where am I going to have to go to find GM service? Saratoga or Albany County? Think of the fuel I am wasting driving that far. Not to mention the time. When my mechanic (also located in Glenville) of 25 years retired, I intentionally purchased my vehicle from Salisbury to have convenient service. Now I will have to take time off from work or waste a Saturday. Whatever happened to common sense?

Salisbury Chevrolet closes its doors after six decades

    Today will be the last day Salisbury Chevrolet owner Anna Gerrity puts two bananas, a boiled egg and a couple of energy bars on General Manager Dan Carlton’s desk.
    “Every morning she would come in and give me this,” Carlton said Thursday.
    Many other traditions will end today at Salisbury Chevrolet, as will the dealership itself, which lost its franchise agreement as GM slashed the ranks of its dealerships.
    “We want to thank all of our employees and customers — great memories. We’re going to miss them as much as they miss us,” Carlton said. “It was fun. Being in the car business — it’s a pressure cooker industry. The employees that were here and the customers we were lucky to have had in the area — they were great. The place was more like a family than a dealership.”
    A hoisted American flag undulated in the breeze in the middle of a concrete parking lot Thursday, where few cars were left. The 20 or so remaining vehicles in inventory have been sold to other local dealers, who helped Salisbury avoid selling the vehicles at auction.
    “A bunch of dealers were nice enough to buy our remaining new car inventory,” Carlton said.
