GE clean technology center bringing jobs to Michigan Corporation could hire 1,200 people

General Electric Corp. plans to announce Friday that it will open a research and development center in metro Detroit with at least 1,200 new jobs to explore clean technology.
GE Chairman and Chief Executive Jeffrey Immelt is to address the Detroit Economic Club on Friday, and a spokesman for Immelt said the speech would contain "some news" and that there also would be an announcement that same day.
Liz Boyd, spokeswoman for Gov. Jennifer Granholm, said she had no comment late Wednesday. One person familiar with some of GE's discussions said the new center would be based in Wayne County and would involve research into clean technology.
The project could be a boon to Michigan beyond the impact of new jobs in a state with the highest unemployment rate in the nation. Michigan is home to large numbers of college-trained engineers who have lost jobs.
GE is one of the world's largest companies, producing everything from lightbulbs to jet engines. It has invested in battery maker A123, a Massachusetts-based company that is working on advanced automotive batteries for cars of the future at a center in Novi.
Wouldn't it just be SO schenectady to have them close Niskayuna and move it to Detroit
They left before....they could leave again! And wasn't that rumored before about R&D leaving schenectady county?

Where's the owner of Schenectady County, the economic development CZAR Death Ray on this shocking development? Nothing-not a fax-not a peep-silence.
Last we saw Death Ray he was fressing free burritos at Bombers. Do you hear the latest-Bombers is so busy they have closed on Sunday? So crowded nobody goes there anymore? You can't make it up.
The Gazetto "reports" that nearby eateries are jumping up and down at the governmental beanery. It's helping business? Unfair competition always "helps" the losers. Stick to the pathetic City School Bored-the only area where you make any sense.
Will there be ANY coverage on this from the Gazette? I wonder, as it doesn't really impact the county...except for the major loss to the tax base that we could have had if they were to have built here or, perhaps, tried to clean up and build on a place like the former ALCO plant.
