SCHENECTADY - Federal, state and local law enforcement agencies descended on the city's Mont Pleasant section after the discovery of a container labeled anthrax, officials said today.
A law enforcement official said the investigation is at least in part focused on Congress Street, which has been closed at Broadway.
The FBI was called in after police learned about the container, said officials who spoke on condition of anonymity. It is unclear if the discovery poses any danger.
A county official said someone has been taken into custody, but the FBI has declined to say whether an arrest has been made.
The FBI would say little about the case.
"The FBI received information it is following up on. FBI, State Police and the Schenectady Police Department are conducting an investigation," Supervisory Special Agent Paul M. Holstein said in a statement released by the agency's Albany Field Office.

SCHENECTADY — Preliminary tests on items recovered behind an auction house have come back negative for any biological agents, county officials said this afternoon. Schenectady County District Attorney Robert Carney and Emergency Management Director Tom Constantine said they were told that the tests showed none of the agent they were looking for. Items were taken to an FBI laboratory and tested, but did not reveal any substances that could be linked to bioterrorism. FBI, state and local authorities have been searching behind the auction house off Congress Street since this morning, after a disturbing discovery by the houses’ owner. A local businessman called the FBI Thursday night after discovering a substance outside his New York Surplus Auction house.
