Olive Garden pulls Letterman ad
By ANDY BARR | 6/18/09 1:04 PM EDT
CBS late night comic David Letterman.

Following a week of back and forth between CBS late night comic David Letterman and Sarah Palin over a crude joke he told about the Alaska Republican governor’s daughter, the Olive Garden restaurant says it is cancelling all of its scheduled ads on Letterman’s “Late Show” for the rest of the year.

In an email to a Letterman critic obtained by POLITICO, a spokeswoman for the Italian restaurant chain wrote that “there will be no more Olive Garden ads scheduled for ‘The Late Show’ with David Letterman in this year's broadcast schedule,” citing the talk show host’s “inappropriate comments.”

“We apologize that Mr. Letterman’s mistake, which was not consistent with our standards and values, left you with a bad impression of Olive Garden,” wrote Sherri Bruen, the company’s guest relations manager.

Bruen said the company “screens network television programs whenever possible,” but explained that “telecasts, such as ‘The Late Show’ with David Letterman, are taped on a daily basis, preventing advertisers from reviewing the content prior to airing.”

A spokesman for the company confirmed Thursday that for now it has cancelled all its remaining scheduled ads on the CBS program for the rest of the year.

Conservative radio host John Ziegler, who previously interviewed Palin for his film “Media Malpractice: How Obama Got Elected and Palin Was Targeted,” organized a lightly attended protest Tuesday outside the “Late Show” studio.

Ziegler has listed contact information for 14 advertisers on Letterman’s show, including Olive Garden, on his website dedicated to the comedian’s firing. He called the news an “obvious victory” but vowed to continue “our quest for some sense of accountability for Letterman in this matter.”

Letterman has apologized for his comment last week about Palin’s daughter getting “knocked up by Alex Rodriguez” during the governor’s recent visit to a Yankees baseball game. Palin attended the game as part of a trip to New York.

“I told a joke that was beyond flawed, and my intent is completely meaningless compared to the perception,” Letterman said. “And since it was a joke I told, I feel that I need to do the right thing here and apologize for having told that joke.”

After repeatedly blasting the late night comic in statements and interviews last week, Palin accepted Letterman’s apology on Tuesday.

“Letterman certainly has the right to ‘joke’ about whatever he wants to, and thankfully we have the right to express our reaction,” she said in a statement.

We all make mistakes now and then.  The Rotterdam Rpublicans threw John Mertz off the ticket.  He was a mistake.  Sarah Palin is a hussy who needs a muzzle too now and again.

Letterman was out numbered. He had no choice but to apologize. The people in this country, whether dems or reps, male or female, a Palin supporter or not, had the common sense to recognize a pornographic, sexual slander, directed at a 14 year old. Even the liberal media found it beyond distasteful and out of line!

Welcome to the Playboy America......I'm sure Mr. Hefner and Mr. Flint did a 'full spread' about Mr. Letterman....

I agree that he should be fired and that others have been fired for less.  I found this site, which states a bunch of advertisers for his show.  I haven't really watched it in years, but if I was going to start watching something in this time slot, I know that it wouldn't have been him anyway.  I think that going after the people who advertise on his show are the right ones to go after.  In fact, if it wasn't for them, he wouldn't have a show.  The TV stations don't look at the ratings for the show because they want to know if people are watching the show, they look at the ratings because they want to count how many people are watching the commercials, so they can decide how much they can charge advertisers.

BTW, the biggest advertiser I see from this list... (ironically, in a way)... is Johnson and Johnson.

Letterman should have been canned for tasteless teen sex joke

American society hit a new milestone of depravity last week when David Letterman and his staff actually dreamed up, fine-tuned and delivered a poor excuse for humor at the expense of a 14-year-old girl [June 13 Gazette].
This marked a low-water mark of his tumbling career. Perhaps it’s the bitterness of B-status in the Tonight Show rivalry or simply a bunch of unfunny people who have lost touch with the public’s sense of humor.
The differences between this episode and that of Don Imus are clear-cut. Imus offered a fleeting remark while observing the Rutgers women’s basketball team — no premeditation, copy writers or planning to offend someone (however, it was clearly offensive). He certainly didn’t come back on his program the next day and repeat the comments. Letterman is exactly the opposite. Imus was forced to pay the price, despite a prompt and serious apology, even going so far as to meet with the team members, because the basketball team had a voice in Al Sharpton and his black militia, who are ready to ride at a moment’s notice.
It’s a sad state of affairs when white, teenaged girls in America have no such champion. It is the responsibility of CBS programming heads to step up and dispense equal justice. If Imus must pay the price, so too must Letterman.
We deserve better, Sarah Palin’s daughter certainly deserves better, than to be the butt of perverted jokes in a failed attempt to attract ratings against his new rival in late-night television.

The right  have been calling unwed mothers sluts for years. They have built careers out of shaming women for having sex outside of marriage.

I hear Hulu is going to a paid service - but what a cool service!

Discovery Channel has some great shows, most of them are free on their site. Ice Road Truckers rules!

REALLY? Wow! You mean only conservatives call women sluts and "hos" like the rappers do. Gosh, if Bush knew that rappers were conservatives, he could have enlisted them to help him gain the youth vote.

Gee...I don't remember using the word slut on this board. In fact I did a search on it and it only came up for the first time when 'somebody' posted it.

And ya have to get with the times 'somebody'....there are no such things as ho's or sluts.....it's a free sex society now. EVERYBODY'S DOIN' IT!! Ya know....if it feels good...do it!!!!

From what I remember, that 'way of life slogan'  came from the liberal 60's movement!
