Why one longtime GOP voter is giving up on it

This is difficult for me to write, as I have been a Republican since I first registered to vote 64 years ago. However, I have become disillusioned over the direction that the Republican Party has taken both nationally and statewide.
To call what has taken place in New York — all the Republicans and two very suspect Democrats — a coalition is a travesty. Please!
As for the sudden, "We are now going to change the broken system in Albany; people first, politics last." Where have you been the last 40 years? Certainly not passing legislation that polls have shown the people wanted, i.e., campaign fi ance reform; budgets enacted by the Legislature, not three men; a system where one man cannot keep a bill from reaching the floor; no last-minute passing of bills that don't even get read; sincere ethics legislation. So many opportunities to make New York a model of state government and such feeble and pathetic excuses and petty bickering that is the antithesis of good government.
Where have all the statesmen gone? They are certainly not in Albany!
No, I am not going to become a Democrat, but will register as an independent, hoping that someday there will emerge a strong third party that will force the others to pay more attention to the needs and wishes of the people and not to special interests and/or their own selfish agendas.
I do not believe this so-called coalition is aimed at better government, but rather is an effort by the Republicans to keep their committee chairmanships, fancier offices and extra perks afforded to the party in power.
Which brings up the point. Why should the party in power be better treated? All the legislators should receive the same pay, the same levels of accommodations and staffing. Less opulence would save the taxpayers money and, oh yes, has anyone heard the Legislature talking about cutting their part of the budget? I guess not.

If more people registered as independent maybe the Reps and Dems would both take a more serious view of we the people instead of just ignoring us and our wishes.

Folks need to be aware that enrolling in the Independence Party is different from registering as unaffiliated with any political party (i.e., "blank").

You're right Brad we should register blank and just be independent voters with no party affiliation.

In the New York senate there is a power struggle going on right now between the Republicans and Democrats. Two Democrats switched to the Republicans side giving the Republicans the majority. Now the Democrats are throwing hissy fits, and literally locking themselves in the legislative chamber to keep the Republicans from taking control.

Not only that, but when the Republicans finally gained control of the senate, and opened the session with the Pledge of Allegiance, the Democrats refused to stand. When one of the Democrats tried to stand, he was pulled down by his colleagues.

But don't question their patriotism. If you do, then you're just being a bigoted right wing radical.

What a bunch of immature idiots we have in the Senate, and they get a real good salary and the best health-care policy available to act like a bunch of a**'s.

when the outlaws take over the country like the repubs did then we might as well not have a country if it is run by the outlaw party so why pledge allegiance to any flag and if the repubs somehow have a coup and steal another election I will go to the other side over there, and get out for onece and for all.

What I find most upsetting is the illegal Gestapo tactics they employed like turning off the lights and shutting the internet down. Wow, the Sandinista murderers and Castro would be proud of how the Democrat leaders act when they don't get what they want or when things don't go their way! Amazing! However I heard that is how they actually do it at th county chambers here too, so I am not surprised. They learned it somewhere.

Geesh.......... I posted under the Salisbury thread before I even read this.  It's like I have a sixth sense.  How did I know that you believe bribing two member of the opposing party with leadership positions if they vote to change the balance of power, would you somehow twist it to where the Democrats were the ones using gestapo tactics.  Again, if the roles were reversed, the Reps would be screaming how the voice of the people were ignored, and the dirty tricks of the democrats are threatening our democracy,,,,SCREAMING,,,,,,,COMMUNIST,,,,,,,COMMUNIST!!!!!!!

But since it was the "good guys" who pulled it off, it's OK.  If the Reps can't beat'em at the polls, just bribe a Senator with power to get him to turn his back on his constituents.  The ends justifies the means.  Party before principle.

Many Americans and party hacks like Graham follow politics like it's the Yankee Red Sox rivalry.  The players get paid millions, while the stiffs at in the stands pay $100 a seat and $9 for a beer, while bitching that these guys are overpaid babies.  And regardless of who's on the team year after year, a Yankee fan will always tell a Red Sox fan that my team is better than your team.  When the fact of the matter is, they're ALL overpaid bums who could care less about how much the fan in the stands are paying, and only plays the game for the money, and fame.  Refusing to sign autographs for the 12 year old boy in the stands, or even acknowledging the fan exists. And you end up waking up the next morning broke with a hangover.

CAPITOL
GOP: Record was doctored
New gambit in Senate standoff

BY MICHAEL VIRTANEN The Associated Press

The Republican-dominated faction claiming control of the New York Senate says a Democratappointed legislative staffer doctored the original, official minutes of the session three weeks ago to delete the GOP-staged coup to seize the majority.
In court papers, the faction claims the change was criminal, making it appropriate for a judge to intervene in the three-week-old power struggle and order the record corrected. That would officially show dissident Democrat Pedro Espada of the Bronx as Senate president, put in charge by his Republican allies.
“There was a vote. The majority voted to elect Espada,” said John Ciampoli, his lawyer. “There’s an official record, and one of the issues really is if the record was illegally altered.”
The Republicans accused Senate Secretary Angelo Aponte of having the final record changed, as.................>>>>......................>>>>...........http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....602&ViewMode=GIF

DiNapoli moves to withhold Senate pay
July 2, 2009 at 5:25 pm by Rick Karlin

This just in from Comptroller Tom DiNapoli: he wants to withhold Senate pay, something that Gov. Paterson has been urging for more than a week.

Here is the release:

Shortly after the Senate leadership controversy arose, I directed my staff to stop processing any Senate vouchers, including those for Senators’ travel. To date, we are holding more than 250 vouchers, totaling $560,000.

The question of withholding Senators’ pay has raised complicated legal and constitutional issues. My staff has been meeting with Governor Paterson’s staff to resolve those issues. These discussions are ongoing.

Out of respect for the separation of powers, I have strived to avoid inserting my office into what is essentially an internal matter within a separate branch of government. But the deadlock in the Senate is undermining the ability of state government to function. Taxpayers are paying a very high price. The stalemate is costing taxpayers across the state millions of dollars a day.

As the state’s fiscal officer, I have a responsibility to taxpayers to safeguard their interests. These are difficult fiscal times. The state needs leadership and action...........>>>>................>>>>...........http://blog.timesunion.com/capitol/
