SAYING IT'LL HELP REDUCE THE NUMBER OF CASES OF HEART DISEASE AND TYPE 2 DIABETES, GOV. PATERSON IS INTRODUCING LEGISLATION REQUIRING RESTAURANTS TO PROMINENTLY POST CALORIE AND NUTRITION INFORMATION.  IF APPROVED, THE MEASURE WOULD APPLY TO RESTAURANTS WITH 15 OR MORE LOCATIONS NATIONWIDE. THE GOVERNOR SAYS THE STATE IS ALREADY SPENDING ABOUT $6 BILLION A YEAR IN COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH OBESITY.  SOME IN THE RESTAURANT BUSINESS SAY IT WOULD BE ANOTHER BLOW TO AN INDUSTRY THAT'S ALREADY STRUGGLING TO STAY AFLOAT.

I just wish the government would stay out of my life and do what they were elected to do, manage a fiscally responsible state government.

no offense gov. patty but i know that there is over a weeks worth of calories in the grilled chicken alfredo extra cheese sauce double stuffed lobster ravioli with a side of butter soaked garlic bread, mashed potatoes topped with cheddar cheese, gravy, and more gravy, side salad topped with even more cheese, and more garlic bread croutons.  My wife will just be really upset to find out exactly how many calories are in her favorite dessert - triple chocolate devils orgasm explosions chocolate frosted chocolate cake with the warm chocolate fudge filling.

THANKS FOR RUINING MY OCCASIONAL INDULGENCE OF EATING OUT!

IF YOU CAN FIND A SMOKER THAT ACTUALLY THINKS SMOKING IS HEALTHY, I WOULD SUPPORT SOMETHING LIKE THIS.  PEOPLE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN BEHAVIOR.  IF I WANT TO MAKE A CHOICE THEN I WILL PAY THE CONSEQUENCES.  STAY OUT OF OUR LIVES!!! NO MORE GOV. INTERFERENCE

Governor wants new rules on disclosing calorie counts

By RICK KARLIN, Capitol bureau
First published in print: Tuesday, May 19, 2009

Albany -- Enjoy that slice of carrot cake guilt-free while you can. Gov. Paterson thinks you ought to know that it contains 1,500 calories, and wants a law requiring chain supermarkets and restaurants to tell you about it.

It's the new front in the governor's battle with obesity. The proposed legislation, announced Monday at the Capitol, honors a promise from Paterson's State of the State speech in January, and bolsters what the governor hopes will become one of the hallmarks of his tenure: a wide-ranging anti-obesity campaign.

"The legislation will help New Yorkers make better decisions about what they eat," Paterson said. "When people know what their choices are, they seem to make better choices."

The governor's office cited a study showing that fast-food customers who saw calorie information displayed purchased an average of 52 fewer calories than customers who did not see the count. The New York City initiative is expected to prevent at least 30,000 new cases of diabetes over the next five years.

The bill would apply to restaurants, supermarkets and convenience stores that are part of chains with 15 or more locations. Paterson said he hoped smaller mom-and-pop businesses would voluntarily post the calorie data, as well.

The governor's plan mirrors a measure already adopted in New York City under Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Restaurateurs say they can live with the city's version of the plan, but they're concerned that the statewide bill could lead to a flurry of additional regulations by individual counties. They want the bill to include a "preemption clause" that would prevent counties from instituting additional regulations such as mandates to list sugar or sodium content in addition to calories, said Rick Sampson, president and CEO of the state Restaurant Association.

"We'd like to see one statewide uniform bill," said Sampson, who added that he has no indication that is happening.

If passed by lawmakers, the measure could quickly land in the governor's political win column as this year's legislative session approaches its final month.............>>>>...........>>>>..........http://www.timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID=801359

I think that NYS has a secret plan to force all the businesses out of the state and tax the rest of us into bankruptcy.

Maybe you didn't hear about the soda tax.  And here's a question about this...how is this information going to be posted so that ALL are aware of it.  I mean really, wouldn't we just be setting ourselves up for lawsuits for...let's say...the blind fat guy who couldn't see the sign to tell him that a Big Mac is actually a Big Heart Attack?  Or that a Whopper should be better known as a Coronary-in-waiting?  Gee, I can't wait.  Then, there's the children.  Are the blue helmet soldiers who are going to march through the streets start arresting anyone who feeds their children under a specific age for feeding them "incorrectly" per government standards when they go out?

Governor Paterson, open your eyes, shut your mouth. (maybe I shouldn't say that in this PC world)

It is more of a plan to end small business and have just corporate giants, which they can more effectively heard, cajole, bully and manage to carry their water. Pesky small businesspeople are way too independent to allow to succeed here. they want GE (with Ismelt at the helm promoting their ideology,) Wal-Mart, Sears, Price Chopper and a bunch of chain restaurants who can do nutritional labeling and lab study of each foodstuff in advance to print on the menus. Small guys be damned! Go to hell Canalis, go to hell Ferraris, drop dead anyone cooking from scratch, being as lawless as devising daily specials made up with the whim of the creativity of the chef!

Think about your favorite little place, having to send out a sample of the food (with the portion size down to the ounce) to a lab, paying hundreds of dollars, waiting to get the results in two weeks, then printing it on the menu. THEY CAN'T DO THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IDIOT POLITICIANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
