Would your group like to serve Summer Lunch to hungry kids in Schenectady for a week this summer? This year, Schenectady Inner City Ministry (SICM) will offer free lunches to children age 18 and under, at 12 locations. SICM needs volunteers to serve at the following sites: Central Park SICM Office, 930 Albany Street in Hamilton Hill
Jerry Burrell Park, Hamilton Hill
Quackenbush Park, Mont Pleasant
Hillhurst Park, Bellevue
New Creation in Christ, Mont Pleasant
Steinmetz Municipal Housing, off Albany Street
It's hunger that brings kids to the SICM Summer Lunch program. Many of the children served don't have regular lunches when school is not in session. Last summer, SICM served over 30,750 lunches, and was feeding approximately 850 kids per day by mid-summer. This program meets a substantial need in the city and is a rewarding experience for volunteers. SICM needs at least 500 volunteers to help with this summer's initiative summer. Typically three to five volunteers work at each site for two hours mid-day, and lunches are served between 11:15 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The program operates for 9 weeks, from June 29 until August 28.

Based on the length of the lines at DSS, there should be many able-bodied men and women who are receiving Welfare benefits or unemployment compensation and who have an abundance of time to support such a cause by volunteering their time. I wonder if anyone from SICM has approached those responsible for county government to request posting a bulletin.

Are you kidding! Those in line at DSS are the ones with the kids that will benefit from this lunch. Gee....what are food stamps suppose to buy?

Why when they receive food stamps and WIC (Women w/ Infant Children) provisions? I have seen some of the food stamp recipients cashing out at the grocery stores. Their carts have more expensive items than what I can afford to buy on my salary.
One additional thought on this topic, food stamps should not be redeemable for ready to serve or prepared meals. They cost more than purchasing the ingrediants and cooking from scratch and are unhealthy because they contain high amounts of salt.

They dont look malnourished thanks to highfructose corn syrup and all the other fillers......malnourished doesn't mean skinny..... a person can be 300lbs and not have a single good vitamin/mineral.....starvation is being skinny and hollywood does it on purpose...
