Schumer to IHOP: Serve New York maple syrup April 30, 2009 at 1:58 pm by Steve Barnes, senior writer
New York ’s senior U.S. senator, Charles Schumer, has asked IHOP to stock New York-made maple syrup in all of its 44 locations in the state, a call prompted by the pancake chain’s recent commitment to use Vermont syrup in its (for now lone) restaurant in the Green Mountain State.
In a letter to IHOP CEO Julia Stewart, Schumer wrote:
I believe that replicating this option in New York with New York’s own maple syrup will be both a delicious option for customers as well as a boon to the State’s maple tapping industry.
Local IHOPs are in Schenectady, Colonie, Clifton Park and East Greenbush.

Julia Stewart President and CEO IHOP
Dear Ms. Stewart:
I write to ask that the International House of Pancakes (IHOP) offer New York State maple syrup in each New York restaurant location. I understand that IHOP’s Vermont locations offer customers Vermont maple syrup, and I believe that replicating this option in New York with New York’s own maple syrup will be both a delicious option for customers as well as a boon to the State’s maple tapping industry.
When IHOP announced the opening of restaurant locations in Vermont, Vermonters were understandably eager to taste their own delicious maple syrup atop IHOP’s pancakes. Maple tapping is a healthy industry in Vermont, and tappers in the state are very proud of their work and end product which accounts for the largest maple syrup production operation in the United States.
The people of Vermont know that nothing is better than the taste of pure maple syrup, and that is why they demanded the real thing at their restaurants. I believe that a similar demand could exist in New York, which is home to 200 million more maple trees than Quebec, Canada, the world’s current leader in maple syrup production.
Despite the abundance of maple trees in New York, the State taps 40 million fewer trees than Quebec. I believe that New York has yet to unleash the potential of its maple syrup industry, so I introduced legislation that would incentivize private landowners to open their trees to maple tappers. S. 552, the Maple Tapping Access Program could be the boost that New York needs to situate itself as a world leader in maple syrup production. An arrangement with IHOP, modeled after the Vermont restaurants, could be the perfect way to introduce New Yorkers to their own delicious product, while also opening a new market to New York tappers.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact Katie Kulpa in my Washington, D.C. office at 202-224-6542.
Sincerely Charles E. Schumer United States Senator
Coming next: Schumer asks Mrs. Smith's Pies to only use NY Apples when selling to NY residents, followed by a request that the Sue Bee only use Honey deposited in combs in NY (Gotta stimulate our bee population, dontchaknow).
This is another new low from Upchuck Schumer. He was the first to promise to create 250,000 Upstate jobs. Then Clinton and Spritzer also tricked Upstate rubes and hicks.
Upchuck Schumer also showed up like an fool to support Death Ray's idiotic "coffeehouses and condos" on the ALCO site, where only industrial jobs should be created. This guy has to go in November.
First, I agree with shadow in that the government should clearly stay out of private businesses 'business'.
Second, Vermont has restaurants and diners that have supported and served Vermont maple syrup BEFORE IHOP ever entered the state. So why didn't Chuckie see this potential years ago. NYS clearly has more diners and restaurants that serve breakfast than there are IHops, that could have surely offered NYS Syrup.
The government is just getting way tooooo intrusive.

Upchuck Schumer never saw a business he didn't want to interfere in nor a tax he didn't want to hike. "You get the Government you deserve"... Winston Churchill
Maybe Mr.Shumer should take a Sunday drive through Duanesburg and all the other country towns purchasing all the syrup at the roadside stands and at the orchards etc.....I'm sure he could pull NYS out of this pit on his own.......WTH......
