Verizon New York is proposing to increase the monthly rate for its message-rate service for local calling by $1.95 per month.
Message-rate service is currently $13.85 a month, with each local call costing 9 cents.
In a filing with the state Public Service Commission, Verizon says it wants to increase the monthly rate to $15.80. The cost per call would remain at 9 cents.
Verizon says it needs to increase the cost of message-rate service because it is losing so many customers to competitors. It also wants the rate increase to help pay for its FiOS fiber network that competes with cable TV companies, which are offering Internet, phone and TV over their systems.
