Schenectady
County growth
rate 2nd in region

SCHENECTADY — Schenectady County was the second fastest-growing county in the Capital Region from 2007 to 2008, according U.S. Census Bureau data contained in a press release from the county.
County officials said its population increased from 150,473 to 151,427 from July 1, 2007 to July 1, 2008. The county has grown 2.6 percent since 2004, according to a press release.
A total of 32 counties in the state saw a decline or no growth this past year. Schenectady County’s 0.6 percent increase ranks it in the top five fastest growing counties in the state.
The only counties that had more growth were Orange, with a 0.9 percent increase; Ontario, 0.7 percent; Saratoga, 0.7 percent; and Tompkins, 0.7 percent increase.
“For the past five years creating and maintaining job opportunities throughout Schenectady County has been a top priority of the County Legislature,” said Legislature Chairwoman Susan Savage in a press release. “We have created more than 3,000 new jobs and have attracted over $3 million in new investments.”
Savage said she is confident growth will continue through continued economic development and strategic planning.

How has the percentage/number of county residents receiving public assistance, particularly welfare, changed during this period of time?  How have the number of jobs and the per capita income changed?  And, please don't tell me about Gillen's 3000 new jobs.  That fantasy has already been debunked by the recent report re: the Schenectady IDA issued by the  NYS Comptrollers office.

Once again, the Daily Gazette fails to ask the questions and allows itself to be used as a campaign flyer for the Democratic party.

One additional note re: this story, the author exhibited poor journalistic practice by mixing statistics.  We learn that the population grew by 954 (0.63%) from 2007 to 2008 and are then given the % population growth since 2004 (the last 4 years).  What started out as being a factual report of population change issued by the US Census Bureau quickly degraded to a promotional piece for a politician when the story was hyped by blending statistics representing different periods of time.

I took several freshman level journalism courses while attending Syracuse University Newhouse School of Communications during which I learned about the questions to be reported in any well written news story.  I would recommend that several of the reporters working at our hometown paper return to school for a refresher.

"We have created 3,000 jobs?" BS-Thousands of jobs have left this County since Kratz Savage and Death Ray took over. Keep repeating the lie and some sheeple will believe it. Taxpayers are fleeing while welfare recipients move in.

HOUSING SLUMP CONTINUES-SCHENECTADY COUNTY THE WORST!

(TU)-The Capital District showed sharp declines in both the number of homes sold and the median sale price in February. Schenectady County was again the worst. The median sale price fell 18% to $144,000 (lowest in the area), while the number of closed sales fell 17%! Some "renaissance".

Yeah thank you coven for raising our Schenectady County taxes a record 10% in a recession! By so doing you have collapsed both our home values and resale opportunities. Nobody wants to buy property in the crime and tax County. Say Schenectady County....

I would be willing to bet that the "growth" rate corresponds with the "growth" in the lines out the door and down Broadway at the DSS
building every morning. If they do not correlate exactly, the difference can probably be found among the defendants in the county
courthouse...a growing number of which are natives of New York City. It is well known that Schenectady County is not only the place to
go for DSS handouts, but one of the most lenient in terms of punishment. Most of Carnival Bob's highly touted "conviction rate", which
we will be hearing about any day now, is the result of severely watered down plea deals.

Lines at the welfare office (new and improved!) and the Courthouse (soon to be new and improved!). Savage and Co. have chased all the taxpayers out, all the industrial jobs out, all the professionals out. Replaced them with welfare bums and criminals from NYC. This is a big accomplishment! For idiots only.

Coming soon we need a new and improved County Jail! The current model is too small for mothers of the year, mad bombers on the City School payroll and run of the mill murders and rapists.

Hey....it is true. Schenectady is growing. Just drive down Broadway and see the line of people waiting in front of the DSS bulding. The line is getting longer and longer every day!!

The lines remind me of those at soup kitchens during the great depression.  And, those people are afforded by our public "servants"  such respect and courtesy being required to wait outside the building in the rain, snow and wind.

The county has a new and expensive DSS government building that apparently has no room to temporarily house the masses of humanity needing public assistance as the result of failed city, county, state, and federal government policy.  Pathetic.  And, these lines will grow longer as the President and Congress take us at breakneck speed toward socialism.

Why is there such a long line with the 3,000 jobs Death Ray/Savage created? It doesn't make sense.

If you thinks it's bad now just wait...The horrible Kratz in the State government want to increase welfare payments by 30%! And chase the job creators out.  Patterson can't be thrown out fast enough. Or the Kratz in the State Senate.

Census Shows Continued Growth in Schenectady County

While the population of many upstate counties in New York State shrinks, Schenectady County continues to buck the trend.  According to the most recent U.S. Census Bureau data, Schenectady County is the second-fastest-growing county in the Capital District.  The County has grown from 150,473 residents to 151,427 residents, an increase of 954 from July 1, 2007 to July 1, 2008.  Since 2004, Schenectady County experienced a growth of 2.6 percent.

Thirty-two New York State counties experienced a decline or saw no growth this past year, while Schenectady County's growth ranks in the top five fastest-growing counties in New York State outside of New York City.
