I do not live in the city or know the details of the people in the school system.  But a few years back I met a couple who were livid at Ely. I don't know if this is true, and perhaps someone can set this straight, but they said that Ely created a position for his wife in the school system.

They said back then that the school system was corrupt and they blamed it on Ely. Again....this was told to be by a husband and wife who lived in the district...so I really don't know if this is fact or rumor or just personal perception. Anyone?

My guess is whoever the 'they' are lost control of him......Do we REALLY think this just happened to go unnoticed in a group of folks that were all
'connected' somehow????

It's true! It's true! Mrs. Ely is a teacher at Oneida Middle School. Of course, this is only a coincidence. Beside's this is the dysfunctional Schenectady School District-worst district in the State. Nobody cares-nobody knows from nuthin-nobody says nuthin, ala Raucci, ala suicides, ala gang activities. If Jeff J. can create a job for his wife-why can't the Super? Federal distressed district for FIVE straight years.

On the campaign trail Linda Bellick{mother of Tyler Bellick} has stopped going to public forums. She and the other stooge Della Villa have been unmasked by the press. They don't want you to vote-polls in the City open at NOON not 6AM like every other district. They have moved the polls out of Howe school which is a hot bed of change. Upper Union St voters vote at SHS or Price Chopper Community Room.

Vote for just Joyce Wachala-savior of Arthur's-taxpayer watchdog-not supported by the janitor's union. If you don't live in the City-tell your friends, relatives and co-workers-JUST JOYCE!

SCHENECTADY - A county judge has ruled the defense lawyer for suspected serial bomber Steven Raucci can present questions in writing for her consideration during a future closed door hearing with prosecution witnesses.

The decision Friday by Judge Polly Hoye came hours after she heard arguments in Schenectady County Court from both Ronald DeAngelus and District Attorney Robert M. Carney during a bail hearing. She is expected to decide the matter in coming days.

Arthur's Market is not for sale. The lines at lunch time are getting longer and longer. Artur and Joyce have turned it around. Anyone else would have unloaded it to Metrograft.

Unlike the other candidates Joyce Wachala is not endorsed by the teacher's union, the janitors union nor running for a fourth term. She is the only fiscal conservative in this race. She has fought to keep Howe School on Baker Ave where it has been for over 125 years.

She is not perfect but when you hear that her 4 tires were slashed since she started campaigning, the nonsense about signatures, the fact that Jeff J is pushing Della Villa/Mrs. Tom Bellick, she looks better and better. Thanks to the many poster that have come down to Arthur's Market to support Joyce in her fight against the horrible Schenectady Schools status quo.

SCHENECTADY — The housing market collapse may doom Arthur’s Market.

The Stockade neighborhood’s beloved gathering point, considered the oldest continually operated market in the country, is up for sale.

It’s not because business is bad. On the contrary, business is great. And owners Artur and Joyce Wachala love the store, Artur’s dream job. Their daughter loves her school, too.

But the Wachalas are still paying a mortgage on their former home in Ballston Spa, a house they have been trying to sell for more than a year. Arthur’s Market is doing well — but not well enough to support two mortgages.

When the Wachalas moved to Schenectady to take over Arthur’s Market, they never thought they would still be paying the Ballston Spa mortgage 15 months later. But with the decline in home values, the loss of buyers and the drastic decrease in home loans, it doesn’t look likely that they’ll sell anytime soon.

In recent months they have even put their eight-unit Schenectady apartment building up for sale in hopes of making enough money to pay off their extra mortgage and keep the market. But not even the guaranteed income of a house that is fully rented was enough to tempt any buyers.

Now the Wachalas may have to sell the market to make ends meet. They’re hoping one of the other buildings will go first, leaving them solvent so they can continue to live their dream.

“I don’t know what we’re going to do,” Joyce said. “We’re just going to keep going.”

She and Artur are hoping the market won’t sell. Artur has even tried to keep the decision a secret, insisting at first that it was “just a rumor,” even though his Realtor has been advertising the market in The Daily Gazette.

The secret has been guarded well — most of their customers don’t seem to know that the Wachalas are struggling. They continually ask about the market’s liquor license and other expensive amenities that the Wachalas can no longer afford.

“A lot of people are like, ‘You haven’t got your liquor license yet?’ ” Joyce said. “That is another $1,000 we don’t have right now.”

Even a lotto machine is expensive — it costs more than $600 in the first year, although that may later be offset by the 6 percent commission on lottery sales. The Wachalas have removed their lottery machine.

They’re pinning their hopes on two buildings: 1051 Gillespie St. in Schenectady and 557 Plummer Road in Ballston Spa.

With neither one selling, their agent is advertising that the Ballston Spa house — which is on 12.4 acres — could become a new subdivided neighborhood. That hasn’t drawn any potential buyers either, possibly because new house construction is down significantly with the housing market crash. The Wachalas are asking $260,000 for that house.

In Schenectady, they wanted $189,000 for the Gillespie Street apartment building. They cut that down to $160,000, emphasized that every bedroom is filled and that they have enough parking for every tenant, and still they have no takers.

Joyce Wachala said she was desperate to sell one of the buildings to keep the market.

Where exactly is her residence now? Ballston Spa - as it was just 4 months ago - or the Stockade?

Editorial: Keep Raucci right where he is until trial
Friday, May 15, 2009

It is the job of alleged Schenectady terrorist Steven Raucci’s attorney to seek his client’s release from jail before trial. And while in many cases involving serious crimes, an argument can be made for freeing a suspect, this isn’t one of them.
Raucci is, in a word, dangerous — not just to himself, but others. No one may been hurt physically in the intimidation crimes he is accused of committing, but that’s probably owing more to Raucci’s incompetence than anything. For example, had the explosive he allegedly planted under Gary DiNola’s car in 2006 gone off when the former Schenectady school athletic director was in or near it, he could have been killed. Ditto the targets of any number of the similar arson or bombing crimes he’s accused of attempting.
True, accused does not mean convicted. But Raucci’s alleged behavior pattern — of seeking revenge when he perceives someone has crossed him — raises the specter that he could strike again if given the chance. One of the reasons Raucci’s alleged reign of terror went on so long appears to have been the reluctance of victims to come forward, to tell school or law enforcement officials, lest he seek further revenge.........>>>>......>>>>......http://www.dailygazette.com/news/2009/may/15/515_prints/

Check the date of your story Jan 2007. The Wachala's live above the store. The administration tried the same tact and fell on their face. I own 3 businesses too-guess what- if someone wants to offer me $500,000 they are for sale. Some want to go back to the "good old days" when only the name Linda Bellick was on the ballot.

Yes, the Mad Bomber should be released! Linda Bellick is in trouble and needs her old campaign manager. Guess avoiding all questions, neighborhood meetings and press questions is not a winning strategy.

She even tells the Gazette that they're in financial difficulty with the properties, values and income.

I got no pony in this race Benny, but I told you there's more than meets the eye.

Every business in this City has difficulties. The City tax assessor for starters. At least Joyce Wachala is in the private sector and not some NYS Health Department lob like horrible Linda Bellick.

You're in Nisky-so you always have a choice and a race-this is unique over here. Joyce is not perfect but compared to the others? NO CONTEST. Joyce Wachala is the only one who fought for Howe School, the only one talking about gangs and bullying in the schools, the only fiscal conservative in this race. Joyce has identified over $7 million in wasteful spending. The answer is not 2 more Jeff J puppets. Both Joyce Wachala and Diane Herrmann are going to win. Then we move forward with Operation clean out the barn.

Fact: Meetings where she only invites those "opposed" to the "closure" (it's not closing).

Allegedly: Petitions in local businesses (Salamack's and Gershon's) which are under the "impression" that Howe is CLOSING (incorrect).

Allegedly: Never been to a full PTO meeting - and the only one she DID attend she left before the meaningful discussion started.

Allegedly: Not attending any school board meetings.

Allegedly: Not on any committees or volunteer groups in the school.

Allegedly: Not knowing that her sons teacher was a TEMP (for only one year).

No signs or publicity - except in online forums and her husbands business. A couple of Gazette articles, that weren't exactly favorable (how's their subscription base lately?)

VERY New to the district - recently living in a different county

All properties she and her husband own, actively for sale

So far, all I see are reasons NOT to vote for Joyce Wachala.  No experience, no history in the district, no participation in the school, admitted financial difficulties of her own.  She has not disputed any of those accusations, and frankly, I don't think she can honestly.

I'm not a supporter of Bellick, Herman or the other one - but I certainely see more opportunities for dialogue with them, moving forward - not looking back and beating a dead horse. At least the others have an interest in the district as a whole, not focused just on one building, whatever it's history or sentiment.

You're correct - as I've said, I've got no pony in this race, but you're the one pushing her "candidacy" in the "Inside Rotterdam" forum, not I.

Benny, I like you - don't get me wrong.  You've got a lot of good ideas and vision for this city/county. On this matter, we are gonna have to agree to disagree.  I see your passion, but you're failing to see any other reasoning besides pushing a concept that has no chance for success. Work toward the future. Make the best of a bad financial situation (whatever the cause) - and move forward.

I like you too and we will have to respectfully disagree on this.  The "other one" is a complete stooge for Jeff J and the current failed administration. Linda Bellick is running for her 4th term! I would hope that she sat through more boring meetings-who cares?  Joyce has been at every community forum-Linda hasn't. As far as Howe, when it moves to Central Park it ceases to exist. 125 years of history on Baker Ave is ending this year. 3 of the 4 were against it-Joyce was the only one that did anything.

I will take a new resident with eyes wide open over those two stooges any day. The key thing is to increase voter turnout above the usual 3%. In the towns polls open at 7AM, in the City NOON. They don't want you to vote.
