District stifles Howe opponent

    The Schenectady City School District has barred a local man from posting to its electronic bulletin board after he called the Board of Education members “idiots” for considering a proposal to move Howe International Magnet School students to Central Park Middle School in the fall.
    Meanwhile, opponents of the plan are circulating petitions and plan to meet on Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. in the McChesney Room of the Schenectady County Public Library.
    John Penetra, who posted a message to the bulletin board, said he has been barred from posting any further messages and his post was removed. He said he criticized the board members for considering the proposal and said they should be challenged at the next election.
    Penetra said district spokeswoman Karen Corona told him the post was too political and slanderous. He said the district should have just removed the offensive part of the posting and he has contacted the American Civil Liberties Union. “Unless I’m using some kind of vulgarities…or threatening somebody with physical violence, there should not be any reason for banning somebody.”

Seems to me that he just took the wrong way of speaking out, or used the wrong words.  Pat, while I agree with you that some people have no decency and need to grow up and act as adults, we do still live by the Constitution in this country, including the right to free speech.  Maybe it was a little slanderous, I don't know, but as far as the spokesperson from the school saying that it's too political, hasn't she learned the lesson now that EVERYTHING is political?  I don't know, maybe it'll come out in the end that he has some history of doing this and is only using this incident as a reason to yell and scream about them doing something.  If this is a one time offense, I agree with Mr. Penetra.  If not, then maybe his banning was appropriate.
