This was quoted by Michael on another thread. And I agree with him. Mr. Mertz was instrumental in bringing Masullo Estates to where it is today. Mr. Mertz also played an instrumental role when Wal-Mart wanted to build a super center in Rotterdam. Although he may have his share of critics, I am not one of them. I have always found Mr. Mertz to be reachable and genuinely concerned with the people of this town. I appreciated his outspokenness when defending the taxpayers. His ability to step out of the box and stand up for what he though was right. And I, also like Michael, believe that he is electable if that is the road he chooses in the future.

Quoted Text
I’m more than dismayed by the apparent impending departure of Mr. Mertz from the Rotterdam Town Board.  For the record, it was Mr. Mertz that championed relief for the beleaguered Masullo Estates neighborhood after learning of the matter in his inaugural campaign for office.  He took the time to listen to endless complaints as he went door-to-door seeking support.  More importantly, he pledged to try to do something about it.  After he was elected, he remembered his promise and took up addressing the matter right away.  Despite the obstacles encountered over almost 5 years and criticism from frustrated residents, he never gave up advancing efforts to provide relief.  Through his efforts, the necessary land acquisition for drainage was recently completed.

It would have been easier to walk away.  He didn’t.  For that, I am personally grateful.

He has consistently been the lightning rod on the town issues that scared others into silence.  I believe Mr. Mertz gets votes because he is like-able and connects with the voters.  He understands the concerns of residents and is willing to be an outspoken advocate on their behalf.  With or without the local GOP backing, I believe he is easily electable if he chooses to continue independently.

How about if Mertz and Suhrada just trade seats?  I'm sure that John could go to the County and give them what for, as well as Joe not being afraid to speak up about anything that's going on that he disagrees with.

I was surprised when my wife told me today on the phone this had happened! However, it should not surprise us that Surhada would jump in when Mertz jumps out because in some ways they are a lot alike and are both conservatives too. I read here a few minutes ago Mertz is going to Washington with Jim so that makes sense. Surhada is positioned pretty strongly and I think would be a shoe-in for the county but I saw the post from the Times Union where they won't let him even say the pledge of alliegence so I can understand why he would decide to get out of it after his term or two or whatever it is. Savage and her friends are not nice people, and I imagine Surhada being a doer, wants to work somewhere that he can get something done. I don't blame him. I wouldn't want to work with those petty people either.

I hope Mertz runs for county but it sounds like he is moving up in the world.

I'm still shocked he'd do this. Truly a loss for everyone in the county.
Fortunately, by election time, it won't really matter to me any longer. I wish him well.

Yes, in fact, I'm tired of watching and hearing it...then, I remember that I PAY THEM to act this way!!!...But when somebody good gets in there, they need to stick it out, no matter how bad it gets.  Otherwise, how is anything every going to get turned around?  I still say that Mertz and Suhrada should stay right where they are.

ROTTERDAM
GOP picks Suhrada over Mertz
BY JUSTIN MASON Gazette Reporter
Reach Gazette reporter Justin Mason at 395-3113 or jmason@dailygazette.net.

Rotterdam’s Republican Committee unanimously endorsed Schenectady County Legislator Joe Suhrada to run in place of Town Board member John Mertz.
In accepting the designation, Suhrada announced he will not seek re-election to the Legislature next fall. County Republican Chairman Tom Buchanan said his committee is now interviewing candidates for Suhrada’s seat, but Mertz is not among the candidates who have indicated interest in running.
“We’re interviewing candidates as we speak,” Buchanan said Tuesday morning. “[Mertz] has not indicated a desire to run.”
Mertz currently is a member of the Rotterdam Town Board.
Mertz wasn’t clear about his next step, but indicated he is still interested in running for another term on the board.
“I look forward to continuing my tenure on the town board this year and continuing my support of the Republican Party in whatever manner serves greatest benefit to our residents,” he said in a statement Tuesday.
In another move, the town GOP’s Executive Committee selected Stanley Marchinkowski to fill Democrat John Silva’s seat for the rest of the year. Silva has resigned effective March 1, citing work obligations.
Marchinkowski, a first-year member of the Zoning Board of Appeals, received the committee’s endorsement to run for the remaining two years of Silva’s four-year term in November.
Incumbent Supervisor Steve Tommasone and board member Joe Signore were endorsed for another run at the GOP meeting Monday.
In a surprise move last fall, town Republican Committee Chairman Gerard Parisi announced the party would drop Mertz because of his “controversial actions” and inability to work effectively with other departments in Rotterdam.
Some town party leaders balked at the announcement, saying that dropping Mertz would never receive.......................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....amp;EntityId=Ar01004

ALSO, I HEARD THAT NEITHER MERTZ OR SUHRADA WAS AT THE DINNER.  MAYBE THEY WERE AT THE COUNTY MEETING.  ANYBODY KNOW.  I HEARD TONIGHT THAT MERTZ MIGHT RUN FOR SUHRADA'S SEAT.
This may shed a different light on this issue. Perhaps the reps are just playing chess and repositioning their players.
Either Suhrada wants out of the county leg or the reps feel he's not re-electable for that seat, BUT electable for the town board.
Mertz may want out of the town board position or the reps feel he's not re-electable for that seat, BUT electable for the county leg.

The only thing is that I'm sure Mike Viscusi will be in the running as well. (town or county)So who would get the GOP's support?

Yes?

IMHO

They had that county meeting last night too according to Izvestia.

I'm hearing that Viscusi will get the nod for county leg.  Have heard other names mentioned, but not who has
been decided upon.

Viscusi will be one of the County Reps. The other is unclear but some Hilltown business leaders have stepped up. Hopefully, the under represented Hilltowns will for once have a voice in the new Legislature. Mertz is out. Why is unclear-didn't he run once against Paul Tonko as a sacrificial lamb?

Wait to you hear the deal about who is running with do nothing, Judy D. That should wake a few sheeple and cheer leaders up. The Dems are trying to crush all relics of a 2 party democracy.

Mr. Salami,

Do tell ...

And who will run w/ Dagostino?

Lastly, Salami, I believe that you are from the city?  Any chance that you might have interest in
a political position?
