{TU}-Schenectady-After much planning and anticipation{?}, the County will unveil its "big" plans for the year long celebration of its bicentennial festivities. Chairwoman Susan Savage and county politicians are expected to attend.
County officials will show off the bicentennial logo and Web site.
The event is scheduled for the legislative chamber Sunday at 11AM on the Sixth Floor of the County Building, 620 State Street.
And less than 4 hours notice for newspaper readers. Typical County production, with all these pr and special events experts they can't even get out a timely press release.
this is a marvelous action over here by the county that should bring millions of dollars and lots of young people and plus you have the tourists over there that want to come for the history. Thank you Ms Savage, Judy and Tony plus a big hand for Mr. Gillien as well for the quiet and good work to move forward. Thank you so much for the effort on our behalf we respect that and owe you.
Thanks Sal we needed a laugh. Why are you home at your computer, shouldn't you be at the big announcement? You owe them alright. We gave at the office. Too bad the multi-million dollar taxpayer funded tourist center will not be open for all these tourists you are expecting.

Unfortunately when all is said and done it will cost the taxpayers more money than this ill planned event will bring in but rest assured the true cost of this event will never be told to those of us that pay for things like this with our taxes.
And you guys didn't even mention the BIG piece of this. This appeared in the TU? Why wouldn't something this important be released / stated in the People's Gazette, you know, the PAPER OF RECORD FOR SCHENECTADY COUNTY???

Then where's the announcement coming from the new media representative that we're paying what, $60K a year to? Shouldn't SOMETHING offical have come out of that office by now? Unless we're paying $60K per STORY out of the office, we should hear SOMETHING at SOME TIME!
The tourism center was supposed to be at the Gillette House, across the street from that other taxpayer sieve the Van Dyke. Despite criticism from Joe Suhrada, County "leadership" dumped one million tax dollars into it. Then sold it to the Chamber for one dollar. The Chamber recently stated that they cannot complete it and will attempt to sell. Nobody but Joe said nothing. This is what Sal means by "great work". And you wonder why they raised County property taxes in a recession?
Even the paper was embarrassed at the lack of notice and horrible timing of this. If anyone did go, give us an attendance report on Ms. Savage and the other County "leaders". Knowing how things work here I doubt if the Reps were even informed. The recent pr hirings, including lob "special events" coordinator, makes this one even more hillarious. Another only in Schenectady County....

Year of events to mark county bicentennial Gala planned at Glen Sanders Mansion March 7

Schenectady County officials kicked off a year of events Sunday to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the county’s founding. County officials presented at a news conference a list of activities, at least three each month, to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the county’s chartering, along with a logo and Web site designed to encourage active participation in chronicling the county’s history. While the city of Schenectady dates back to the 1600s, the county charter, establishing Schenectady County’s government, was adopted March 7, 1809. Last January, the county Legislature established a Bicentennial Committee in charge of organizing various events to celebrate the anniversary. “The Bicentennial has really been 200 years in the making,” Susan Savage, chairwoman of the county Legislature, said. A Web site, created for free by The Mossey Group, a local marketing firm, is designed to provide a portal for participation in the bicentennial. A blog has been set up and county residents are encouraged to tell their stories as a way to create a living history. Oral histories are also encouraged and will be sent out as podcasts. “We want this to be a real dynamic experience,” Wendy Voelker, county special events coordinator, said. “This is a great way for people to participate in this history and connect with it,” Bicentennial Committee member Karen Johnson said. The Web address is http://www.schenectady2009.com. The logo associated with the bicentennial is “simple yet meaningful,” Savage said. The light bulb represents the city’s history and future in technological innovation and cre- ativity. The eight rays of light represent the eight municipalities within the county. Various events will take place throughout the year to celebrate the bicentennial and many community organizations are including the bicentennial theme in their events. Voelker said events will be added throughout the year and a complete list can be found on the Web site or by calling her office at 388-4355. Events include a gala at Glen Sanders Mansion on March 7 — the anniversary date of the county charter — History and Heritage Day in June and Genealogy Day in November. The bicentennial is scheduled to end with a fireworks display on Dec. 31. Children’s activities are also planned throughout the year, including art and poster contests.
