A former Schenectady High School student is in trouble with the law — facing a felony — after he allegedly disguised himself as a girl to take a Regents exam for a current student, school officials and police said on Wednesday. The female student’s status — the real student — is under review, an offi cial said. The incident was uncovered, school officials said, when a monitor discovered the name on the test and the person taking it didn’t match. Upon a closer look, authorities realized the “student” trying to take the exam was a male masquerading as a girl, school district spokeswoman Karen Corona said. School officials quickly notified police, who arrived just after 8:30 a.m. Tuesday and promptly arrested 17-year-old Deandre M. Ellis of Alexander Street. Ellis was charged with one felony count of third-degree burglary under a strict interpretation of the burglary statute, police said. Burglary is defined as knowingly entering a premises that you’re not supposed to be in with the intent to commit a crime, Police Department spokesman Sgt. Eric Clifford said. In Ellis’ case, he was not supposed to be at the school and he intended to commit the crime of forgery, Clifford said. The incident happened during the Regents exam on the topic of “Living Environment.” Corona said those giving the exams know which students are supposed to be taking them. They then verify the student is taking the proper exam. In this case, the monitor was walking the classroom aisles, verifying that each student was taking the proper exam. SCHENECTADY — The 17-year-old accused of dressing in women's clothing last month to take an exam for a female friend appeared in court Tuesday to face criminal charges in an unrelated matter.
Visiting Schenectady County Judge Polly Hoye seemed unaware of the test-taking incident involving Deandre Ellis until a prosecutor brought it up.
Hoye adjourned the alleged forgery case, in which Ellis was seeking to be sentenced as a Youthful Offender. He was to receive five years' probation in exchange for pleading guilty to criminal possession of a forged instrument. Details of that charge were unclear.
A woman who said she was Ellis' mother appeared in his support. The teen, who wore a wig and women's clothing, spoke only to tell the judge he is a college student.
Assistant District Attorney Peter Willis objected to granting Ellis Youthful Offender status, mentioning the Jan. 27 test-taking incident, which he said reflects on Ellis' character.
"It is a matter of some concern to me and will be a factor in determining Youthful Offender status," Hoye said.
A proctor at Schenectady High School recognized that Ellis was an impostor and notified her boss. Police were called and arrested the teen. Charges reduced against teen who allegedly posed as female student

SCHENECTADY -- Charges against a cross-dressing teen accused of trying to take a state test for a female friend have been reduced from burglary to criminal impersonation. Seventeen-year-old DeAndre Ellis pleaded not guilty to the charges this morning in City Court during his arraignment before Judge Vincent Versaci.
The judge adjourned the matter until March 5, a day after Ellis is scheduled to appear in County Court on an alleged forgery case. In that matter, Ellis allegedly used a stolen credit card and forged a signature in May, according to Assistant District Attorney Peter Willis.
