Fire crews fighting large residential fire

SCHENECTADY An elderly woman was badly burned and tenants of a downtown apartment building were evacuated during a late afternoon blaze, fire officials said.
     
The unidentified woman was taken to Ellis Hospital in serious condition with severe facial burns following the blaze, which broke out inside Apartment 120 of the Wade Lupe Apartments at 15 Lafayette St., Deputy Schenectady Fire Chief Scott Doherty said.

The building had to be evacuated for a time after the fire, which occurred just before 5:30 p.m., but fire officials said its management had opened up a vacant apartment for tenants who were temporarily displaced.

"It was really blazing when we got there," Doherty said.

He said firefighters were on their way to another lower priority call when they spotted the blaze at Wade Lupe and................http://timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID=764598
