From ABC to DC? Tracy Egan joins 20th race January 24, 2009 at 7:32 pm by Tim O'Brien, Staff writer
Add former WTEN anchor Tracy Egan to the growing list of Democrats interested in running for the 20th Congressional District seat now that Kirsten Gillibrand is about to become a U.S. senator.
Egan, a Saratoga County native and resident, said she has made calls and is interested in the seat. Her father, Bill Egan, narrowly lost an election for the seat in 1962 when its boundaries were different.
“I think this is an important time for the business of the nation,” Egan said. “Kirsten did a great job.”
Gillibrand is taking flak from downstate Democrats for being too conservative, but Egan said “the Democrats in this district are more conservative.”
Ex-news anchor wins backing for Gillibrand seat BALLSTON — The Ballston Democratic Committee has unanimously endorsed Tracy Egan as its candidate to run for the House seat vacated by Kirsten Gillibrand when she was appointed a U.S. senator. Town Chairman George Seymour said Egan, a former local TV news anchor, appeared before the committee Monday night and was immediately given an endorsement. Egan owns a horse farm on Route 50 in Ballston. Egan’s late father, William Egan, was chairman of the Saratoga County Democratic Party. In 1962, he launched an unsuccessful campaign for the 22nd Congressional District seat. Gillibrand was appointed to the U.S. Senate on Friday by Gov. David Paterson to succeed Hillary Rodham Clinton, the new secretary of state. Numerous local politicians have said they’d like to occupy Gillibrand’s former congressional seat. Republicans include state Sen. Elizabeth Little, Assembly Minority Leader James Tedisco and former Assemblyman John Faso. Democrats who have expressed interest include Saratoga County Democratic Committee Chairman Larry Bulman, former Saratoga Springs Mayor Valerie Keehn and city Public Safety Commissioner Ron Kim.

Gotta admit, I didn't know that. Being a family of politicians makes her a bit less attractive to me as a candidate.
20TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT Dems looking to pick winner Interviews will begin candidate selection process BY TATIANA ZARNOWSKI Gazette Reporter
A Democratic candidate for the open congressional seat could be chosen next week. Saratoga County Democratic Chairman Larry Bulman said the party chairmen for the 10 counties in the 20th Congressional District plan to interview candidates over the phone this week and hold faceto-face interviews this weekend. “We’d like to get it done definitely in a week, 10 days,” Bulman said. The county Republi- At a glance can leaders picked their nominee Tuesday. Assembly Minority Leader James Tedisco, R-Glenville, has already started campaigning. But Bulman said waiting to name a nominee won’t hurt that candidate’s chances against Tedisco. “Our candidates who are looking to run are already raising money,” he said. Bulman isn’t worried about running a Democrat in the traditionally Republican district. “I think it’s going to be easier for us than it was in ’06,” he said. In that year, Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand, a political newcomer, beat Republican incumbent John Sweeney. The special election to replace Gillibrand, who became a U.S. senator this week, will take place between 30 and 40 days from when the governor announces it. So far, he has not. In what some officials have predicted will be a fast and expensive race, Bulman defended the Democrats’ decision to take their time. “We want to make sure that at the end of the day, we have the best candidate and the best person that can fill Kirsten’s shoes and do the work that needs to be done for the people of the 20th Congressional District,” he said. “I’m proud of the process that the Democrats are taking.” Bulman’s vote in the matter holds more weight than the other nine county chairmen — 33 percent — because Saratoga County is the most populous of the counties, he said. Bulman himself has withdrawn his name from consideration for the seat after saying last week he was thinking of seeking the party’s nod.
