Kennedy continues quest for Senate seat BY MICHAEL GORMLEY The Associated Press
After wavering briefly, Caroline Kennedy renewed her determination Wednesday to win appointment to the U.S. Senate seat once held by her slain uncle, Bobby Kennedy, a person close to the decision said. After her surviving uncle, Sen. Edward Kennedy, suffered a seizure on Inauguration Day, Caroline Kennedy had misgivings about taking on the new job, the source said, speaking to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak for Kennedy. Earlier in the day, The New York Times and New York Post reported that Kennedy had ended her monthlong bid to succeed Hillary Rodham Clinton, who was confirmed as secretary of state. MSNBC also reported that a person close to Kennedy denied that she was out of the running. Spokesmen for Kennedy and for Gov. David Paterson, who will make the appointment to fill the Clinton seat, wouldn’t comment. The hours of mixed signals were the latest twist in the Kennedy effort, which began with popular support that withered after she drew criticism in her brief tour and early press interviews. The reports were a shock to supporters and to Paterson, who had appeared likely to appoint her to the seat by Saturday. Edward Kennedy, who has been treated for an aggressive brain tumor, suffered a seizure Tuesday at the inauguration of President Barack Obama. The New York Post was first to report his niece’s withdrawal from the Senate contest. The New York Times cited a source it didn’t identify as saying Kennedy withdrew out of concern for her uncle and his illness. But the Post cited an unidentified source as saying she dropped out because she learned Paterson had decided not to choose her. The Gazette printed that? No wonder they are in the toilet. She made an official withdrawal today, as reported yesterday in the NY Post. Andrew Cuomo is the hands down favorite to be the next US Senator.
why do these repubs do this nasty stuff she can do the job. FORCE IT THREW DEMOS AND DO THE RIGHT THING
YUP Sal, I'm sure the 'demos' would force it through even though there is talk about her alleged affair, tax and nanny problems too! It was the 'demos' that puffed up her resume in the first place! Just what NY needs is yet another empty skirt that comes with nothing but her name. Just another puppet! I am grateful that she is not a contender.
And they say now that Gillibrand is the front runner. It was funny watching the news and when they interviewed the politicos from downstate, they didn't know anything about Gillibrand. Actually they were pretty smug when they were asked what their thoughts were about Gillibrand.
I'll say one thing....if Gillibrand gets appointed, she won't have an easy time with the downstaters! She's gonna have to be one tough bit**! OR she will just become another empty democratic skirt that will join the rest of the puppeteers.

According to the latest buzz Gov Patterson will select Kristen G tomorrow! So much for the will of the people who overwhelmingly want Andrew Cuomo. Not only will there be a Democratic Primary for Senate but her Congressional seat will go back to the GOP, probably John Faso.
CAPITOL Kennedy’s midnight e-mail leads to flood of speculation BY MICHAEL GORMLEY The Associated Press
Caroline Kennedy’s mysteriously abrupt decision to abandon her Senate bid gave rise to an ugly swirl of accusations Thursday and feverish speculation over whether she jumped or was pushed. The 51-year-old daughter of President John F. Kennedy was widely considered a front-runner for the Senate seat until she sent a midnight e-mail to reporters and Gov. David Paterson saying she was withdrawing for what she described only as personal reasons. Even though many Democrats had thought Paterson was going to appoint Kennedy any day now, a person close to the governor said Thursday that Paterson had no intention of picking her because he believed she handled herself poorly in introducing herself as a candidate. The person also said there were concerns about possible tax problems for Kennedy, a potential “nanny problem” involving a housekeeper, and media rumors that her marriage was on the rocks. The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he said he wasn’t authorized to speak for the governor, would not elaborate. Kennedy spokesman Stefan Friedman would not detail her reasons for withdrawing, but complained: “This kind of mudslinging demeans that process and all those involved.” The state tax department said it could not find any problems with Kennedy’s tax records. In a December interview, she denied she had any “nannygate” problem and said that her husband, Edwin Schlossberg, was very supportive and that they lived together with their children. In recent weeks, the media gossip Web site Gawker and Vanity Fair have published rumors that Kennedy’s marriage was in trouble. On Thursday, Paterson issued a statement in which he said Kennedy’s decision “was hers alone” and that he hadn’t ruled out any candidate before she withdrew. He is expected to announce his choice today. Among those who are still said to be in the running for the Senate seat left vacant by Hillary Rodham Clinton’s appointment as secretary of state are New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, Reps. Kirsten Gillibrand, Carolyn Maloney and Brian Higgins, and Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi. The buzz surrounding Gillibrand’s chances of being appointed to the United States Senate grew in intensity Thursday. Rachel McEneny, spokeswoman for Gillibrand, D-Hudson, said a Tokyo reporter woke her with an early morning call and that members of the U.S. press were flooding her cellphone with calls. But as of Thursday afternoon, there was no actual news to report. “We have not heard from the governor,” McEneny said. Gillibrand wasn’t commenting on her chances of getting the appointment, although she did confirm earlier this week that she sat down with Paterson in mid-December to discuss the Senate seat. Gillibrand is regarded as a rising star in the House of Representatives, especially after the Democrat pulled off a win by a wide margin in November in the traditionally Republican 20th Congressional District. If Gillibrand is named to the Senate, state law requires a special election be held to fill her seat.
