Grant to help boost recycling in county

SCHENECTADY — Schenectady County wants more people to go green over the next three years and plans to spend some green to achieve those results.
The county will use a $160,000 grant from the state Department of Environment Conservation to launch a comprehensive recycling education and outreach program.
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Schenectady County will work with the county Department of Planning and Economic Development on the program. The grant runs 2009 to 2011.
“This is a new initiative by the county,” said Ray Gillen, county planning commissioner. “We are developing a comprehensive approach to recycling in the county. We already offer electronic recycling, we collect household hazardous wastes and we have composting at the county farm.”
In March, the county Legislature approved initiatives to promote energy conservation and efficiency among its staff and residents, including recycling. They also require the county to purchase energy-effi - cient products, to adopt procedures that encourage construction of energy-efficient buildings and to conduct an energy audit of the county’s transportation fleet. ........................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....amp;EntityId=Ar01005

Sorry folks but I don't quite see the need for $160K being spend on a recycling grant. How many decades have we been recyling now? Unless DEC knows of some new laws on the books relating to recycling, everything is status quo. Nothing new to learn. Just a waste of our money!!
