I got this in my email. http://www.snopes.com/politics/business/storeclosings.aspI wanted to give everyone a heads up that if you tend to give gift cards around the holidays, you need to be careful that the cards will not be honored after the holidays.
Stores that are planning to close after Christmas are still selling the cards through the holidays even though the cards will be worthless January 1. There is no law preventing them from doing this. On the contrary, it is referred to as 'Bankruptcy Planning'.
Below is a partial list of stores that you need to be cautious about.
Circuit City (filed Chapter 11)
Ann Taylor 117 stores nationwide closing
Lane Bryant, Fashion Bug ,and Catherine's to close 150 stores nationwide
Eddie Bauer to close stores 27 stores and more after January
Cache will close all stores
Talbots closing down specialty stores
J. Jill closing all stores (owned by Talbots) Pacific Sunwear (also owned by Talbots)
GAP closing 85 stores
Footlocker closing 140 stores more to close after January
Wickes Furniture closing down
Levitz closing down remaining stores
Bombay closing remaining stores
Zales closing down 82 stores and 105 after January
Whitehall closing all stores
Piercing Pagoda closing all stores
Disney closing 98 stores and will close more after January.
Home Depot closing 15 stores
Macys to close 9 stores after January
Linens and Things closing all stores
Movie Galley Closing all stores
Pep Boys Closing 33 stores
JC Penney closing a number of stores after January
Ethan Allen closing down 12 stores.
Wilson Leather closing down all stores
Sharper Image closing down all stores
K B Toys closing 356 stores
Loews to close down some stores
Dillard's to close some stores

Home Depot closing 15 stores
If anyone has home depot cards, I'll take them - if you're just going to throw them away anyway |

Just buy a gift and dont worry if they tell you they dont like it......I think when we opt for 'the card' it shows that we want to 'be the savior' and have 'the best gift'.......or like myself HATE to shop........
all the stores get billions $$$ in unused gift cards.....we pay for them and then they either get lost or forgotten about.....FREE $$ for these companies and yet there is a 'banking' issue....I'd say they were gambling with our stupidity and against us........meanwhile having 'their own' credit cards and making billions$ on the fees, interest........again, our stupidity...........
time for us to get control of our new technology and our habits....... |

It has come to my attention through an email that the above mentioned stores closings or down sizing are not necessarily all true:
Quoted Text
I talked to the management at Talbot's. They are not closing at Stuyesant Plaza and deny that any stores are closing. They are getting alot of calls and are steamed. I would advise pulling this from your website. If any listing is incorrect, like Talbot's, it could be a problem. Some of the others have been closed so long no one will be buying any Christmas gift cards from them. Know this was well intentioned but could be problematic.
I will let this thread remain until tomorrow because there were posts associated with it and then it will be taken down. Thanks to the person who sent me this corrected email. |

The stores aren't going to tell you the truth as it will affect their bottom line during the holiday shopping because people won't shop or buy gift cards from them. The real truth won't come out until after the new year. Time will tell. |

Rather than taking down the thread, I would recommend that you revise the initial post to state that the matter has reportedly been investigated by snopes.com with the findings being that the report contained a mix of accurate, inaccurate and obsolete information. The web site provides the references upon which the conclusions are based. The link is below: http://www.snopes.com/politics/business/storeclosings.aspI concur with Shadow's assessment that the retailers are not going to disclose during the holiday shopping season any planned closings of their establishments. Providing the link to snopes.com and the list of references that they investigated provides a service to both the buying public and to the retail establishments about which the reports are untrue. |

Personally, I don't like to receive gift cards. In my thinking, it suggests that the giver did not invest the time and thought to select an appropriate gift. Gift cards also limit the preferences and the actions of the recipient as he/she is committed to purchasing an item from the retailer often within a limited timeframe before the gift card expires. That said, I have purchased and gifted a few. |

The following statement from Eddie Bauer was received via email by one of my Duanesburg neighbors and forwarded to me:

To our valued customers: It has come to our attention that misleading information is circulating via email as part of a hoax intended to discourage consumers from buying gift cards from a number of retailers including Eddie Bauer. We want to set the record straight. Eddie Bauer has been in business since 1920 and operates 376 retail stores throughout North America. We also have a robust online and catalog division. In our March 2008 annual report, we announced both the opening of new locations as well as the closing of some older locations as part of our normal course of business. The stores referenced were all closed in January 2008. In 2009, we will again open and close a handful of stores as part of our normal business plan. Eddie Bauer remains committed to providing our customers with outstanding quality, value and service, now and for many years to come. Our gift cards are a great option for the holidays. You can purchase and redeem them at any of our retail stores, through our catalogs or at eddiebauer.com. We look forward to serving you this holiday season. Neil Fiske President & CEO Eddie Bauer

Comments: Don't be misled by this alert. While it's true that many U.S. companies are feeling the effects of the economic downturn and some will no doubt close locations and/or file for bankruptcy in the coming months, most of the store closures listed above had either already taken place or were planned well before the 2008 financial crisis occurred.
Which means that in all but a few cases, fears that gift cards issued by these companies may suddenly become worthless are unwarranted or premature.
That having been said, financial experts do warn that it's risky in general to put off redeeming gift cards in such volatile economic times.
With the caveat that the exact facts and figures seem to vary depending upon the source of information (and it's all subject to change in any case), here's a corrected version of the list above:
Circuit City - Filed for bankruptcy on November 10, 2008 and announced the closure of 155 stores. (source)
Ann Taylor - Earlier this year announced it would close 117 stores. (source)
Lane Bryant, Fashion Bug, and Catherine's - Nine months ago parent company Charming Shoppes Inc. announced the closing of 150 stores. (source)
Eddie Bauer - Closed 31 retail and outlet stores (in line with target number set early in the year) and opened 10 during the first three quarters of 2008. (source)
Cache - Announced early in the year it would close 21 stores and open 16 in 2008. (source)
Talbots - Closed approximately 100 stores in 2008 but is still in business and has no more closings planned. (source)
J. Jill - Owned by Talbots Inc., which wants to sell the chain but has not announced the closure of any J. Jill stores. (source)
Gap Inc. - In mid-2008 revised its projected number of store closings (including Gap, Banana Republic, and Old Navy locations) upward from 85 to approximately 115 stores for the year. (source)
Foot Locker - Projected closing 140 stores in 2008. As of Nov. 20, had closed 129 stores and opened 58 new ones. (source) Wickes Furniture - Filed for bankruptcy in early 2008 and already closed down all retail stores. (source)
Levitz Furniture - Filed for bankruptcy in late 2007 and is still in the process of liquidating assets. (source)
The Bombay Co. Filed for bankruptcy in 2007 and announced it would close all U.S. stores. (source)
Zales - Last February announced the planned closure of 105 stores in 2008. source
Whitehall Jewelers - Filed for bankruptcy in June 2008 and is Closing all stores. (source)
Piercing Pagoda - Owned by Zales. Some, but not all, Piercing Pagoda locations were among the 105 planned closures announced by Zales in Feb. 2008. (source)
Disney - Announced in May 2008 it would close 98 stores. (source)
Home Depot - Announced in May 2008 it would close 15 stores nationwide. (source)
Macy's - Closed 9 stores in 2008. No more closings planned (source)
Linens 'n Things - Filed for bankruptcy in May 2008 and is closing all stores. (source)

Just got an email from both Fashion Bug and Catherines. They both were the same. Even with these disclaimers the whole issue brought out by the original email made me realize just how iffy using a gift card may be especially in today's economic environment. So whether these stores are indeed closing or going bankrupt or not the purpose of the original alerting email has been effective. At least with me it has.

Our Commitment To You
We have learned that some misleading information about retail store closings has been circulated via email as part of a hoax to discourage the purchase of gift cards. A number of retailers including Fashion Bug were named in the email. We would like to take this opportunity to set the record straight.
Fashion Bug is financially sound with 900 retail store locations nationwide, as well as our fashionbug.com website. The recent closing of a number of Fashion Bug stores was part of our normal course of business. Each year, we close some stores and open others in an effort to better serve all of our customers.
As always, Fashion Bug Gift Cards may be purchased or redeemed at all locations and on our website. In fact, Fashion Bug Gift Cards are happily accepted at more than 2,300 Fashion Bug, Lane Bryant, Catherines and Petite Sophisticate Outlet stores nationwide, and at fashionbug.com, lanebryant.com, catherines.com and petitesophisticate.com.
Thank you for shopping with us. We look forward to serving you this holiday season.
