James M. Schaefer, a part-time clerk at The Vineyard on Hamburg Street, submitted a letter to the gazette with his concerns regarding the removal of informmation located in the bar code on the NYS drivers license. Here is a a portion of that article:

Here is why: A customer attempts to purchase an age-regulated commodity. We ask for ID and they produce a New York driver’s license. We look to see if the photo matches the customer. We check the birth date. If the person is “of age,” we scan the bar code on the lottery machine, and the transaction is completed. After the transaction, we print out the scanned (ID) information from the lottery machine, and staple a register receipt from that customer’s purchase. These are our hard copies, which serve as evidence that we checked the ID, the type of transaction, the time and the amount, which are directly associated to the sale. If there are any questions later, we can prove we did “due diligence.”

People asking for ID's is still somewhat inconsistent.  I don't get "carded" at bars, restaurants, or at liquor stores anymore, but if I go buy a rated "M" video game, I get asked.

That said, I'd say removing the bar code info is not a good idea.  Without it, it becomes much, much easier to produce a fake ID.  The bar code aspect cut way down on that sort of act, and has reduced the ability for underage persons to buy alcohol or whatnot.  In addition, it will slow down law enforcement from checking ID's, forcing them to go back to relying solely on calling in the CID, and checking it through the department/agency computers, rather than "instant" access to the require info on in car computers.

Dont forget it can also prevent those pesky illegal immigrants and those on 'the service' from purchasing 'age regulated products'........especially
when the $$ account is attached......

...you are a product of your environment, your environment is a product of your priorities, your priorities are a product of you......

The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.
