I already felt the evidence is overwhelming that gas prices would climb again with an Obama presidency and Democrat-dominated Congress because the Obama/dems opposed any increased drilling in the United States--offshore, in Alaska and in the Midwest oil sands. In a weak economy, higher energy prices would be just what we need for a fullblown depression.

Then I ran across this report on Obama's interview that confirmed my concerns:

Obama: Spike energy costs to make people go 'green'
2007 interview: Proposes government create 'price signals' to control behavior

JOHNSTON, Iowa – In a recently publicized video from the Democratic primaries, Sen. Barack Obama said the government should drive energy bills up though "price signals" in order to force Americans into more environmentally friendly choices.

In the Nov. 9, 2007, interview on Iowa Public Television's "Iowa Press," Obama said Americans like driving SUVs and leaving the lights on, but since "it is undisputable that the climate is getting warmer," consumers would have to change their habits.

When asked what would make consumers change, Obama said government-created "price signals" would make people more mindful of energy costs and compel them to start changing light bulbs and turning off light switches.

Tired of all the heat but no light? Read, "Global Warming or Global Governance? What the media refuse to tell you about so-called climate change"

Associated Press reporter Mike Glover asked, "How do you convince people to change their lifestyle, to live differently?"

Obama's answer, viewable in the video below, was, "I think it is important for us to send some price signals to change behavior. You know, if electricity goes up, people start becoming more mindful of their electricity bill."

When Des Moines Register reporter David Yepsen asked Obama what part of his campaign Americans may not like to hear, the candidate returned to the theme of price signals.

"Number one, we're going to have to start doing a better job of conserving on energy," Obama said. "Americans like to drive their big SUVs. They like to leave all the lights on in their house. We're going to have to change our habits."

He then clarified how the government could implement the kind price signals that change consumer habits.

"We're going to have to cap the emission of greenhouse gasses," Obama said. "That means that power plants are going to have to adjust how they generate power. They will pass on those costs to consumers. … A lot of us who can afford it are going to have to pay more per unit of electricity, and that means we're going to have to change our light bulbs, we're going to have to shut the lights off in our houses."

The full context of Obama's comments about driving up electricity prices to bring about consumer change can be viewed in a second segment of the interview below:

Internet bloggers that began circulating the video earlier today also lent their opinion on Obama's plan for consumer change.

"Is that the function of government — to fix prices as a punitive measure to change consumer behavior?" asked the Hot Air Blog. "It will be in an Obama administration. He and a few elites will decide which consumer behaviors are bad and penalize it with price signals."

New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman, however, commented in a May editorial on the issue of government-created price signals, arguing that a federal gasoline tax would be just the kind of energy "price signal" that would finally persuade Americans to give up their SUVs.

"We need to make a structural shift in our energy economy," Friedman wrote. "The only way to get from here to there is to start now with a price signal that will force the change.

"Barack Obama had the courage to tell voters that the McCain-Clinton summer gas-giveaway plan was a fraud. Wouldn't it be amazing if he took the next step and put the right plan before the American people? Wouldn't that just be amazing?" Friedman wrote.

Thanks for this artilce Kempis. I just copied it and emailed it to everyone I know that is planning to vote for Obama. I believe we will be in deep sh*t, if he gets elected.

Energy prices will rise under Obama, taxes will rise under Obama, health care rationing will rise under Obama. At a speech in Sarasota he announced ONE TRILLION DOLLARS in new spending. Free health care {including illegal aliens}, free college tuition {whether student is capable or not}, and $500 tax credit with free sham wow for every resident.

Obama's soak the rich economic plan is exactly like Herbert Hoover's. Hoover raised taxes, 30% on those making over $100,000. Obama will chase capital and jobs overseas. Reasoning with Obama supporters is difficult {they want change and hope?} but we have 2 days to try.

Obama's idiotic plan to bankrupt coal producers and energy plants is burning up the web. Anyone who turns on a light switch should be outraged. Forget what your Union boss or liberal friends are selling. Vote-McCain/Palin on Row C-Independence Party.

Apparently "Sal" doesn't use electricity "over there". Here's another whopper by Obama. He wants to formulate another army like the national guard.

Actually, Benny, he stated something to the effect that he wanted to make up a federal militia, which there is no such thing, instead we have state militias, as set up by the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution.  Actually, more likely is that he wants something set up to the effect of the Nazi S.S.

If Obama does that there will be another Boston Tea Party and another American Revolution if he tries to take away any of our Constitutional Rights.

I would love to participate, but after taxes, I can't afford to go and BUY a gun to arm myself as part of the militia.

A Civilian National Security Force-to achieve Obama's national security objectives. For what? To suppression your rights and confiscate legal firearms. The first thing the Nazis did was confiscate private firearms. Germany had a leader that also promised change and hope.

The coal issue is another warning shot. Obama wants to bankrupt coal energy plants and coal producers. Obama wants your power bill to "skyrocket". This will devastate the weak economies in the Northeast.

I'm just hoping that with this issue, he's got enough people in some swing states (Va, W. Va, Pa.) upset enough to swing the election away from him.

it was big and booming during Mr.Bush.....but,,,,,the dems say it was 'set up' by Mr.Clinton.....then they say the bust wasn't their fault.....these are
the things people dont see......blinded by flash in the pan.......both parties play it this way......do folks understand that Mr.Obama and his party
have built themselves a very very very tall tower......they have a HUGE HUGE order to fill after all their rhetoric and $$.....will they be able to put their
money where their mouths are????......there will be very very very ANGRY folks if they fail to deliver whatever the hell it is they think they can
deliver......

All those on the Democratic absolute rule ship had better have very large and safe life vests....the public will be watching to check out those vests
and will be wanting and waiting for their government issued life vests........if they are not delivered.......the masses will move.....

...... there is very little difference between the parties as is shown in the campaigning.......they ALL RUB ELBOWS AND USE THE SAME THINK TANKS.....

About Thomson ReutersAl Gore group urges Obama to create U.S. power grid
Thu Nov 6, 2008 4:06pm ESTPost Your Comments | All Comments Email | Print | Share| Reprints | Single Page | Recommend (1) [-] Text [+] By Deborah Zabarenko, Environment Correspondent

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Al Gore's Alliance for Climate Protection has some environmental advice for the incoming Obama administration: focus on energy efficiency and renewable resources, and create a unified U.S. power grid.

On Thursday, the group Gore founded rolled out a new media campaign to push for immediate investments in three energy areas it maintains would help meet Gore's previously announced challenge to produce 100 percent clean electricity in the United States in a decade.

Pegged to Obama's election victory on Tuesday, the Gore group's ads on television, in newspapers and online, pose the question, "Now what?"

"Our nation just made history," one video says. "We have an historic opportunity to boost our economy and repower America with 100 percent clean electricity within 10 years. It will create new American jobs, end our addiction to dirty coal and foreign oil and solve the climate crisis."

More information on the campaign is available online at repoweramerica.org.

Gore -- former vice president, Nobel Peace laureate and star of the Oscar-winning documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" -- has said repeatedly he wants to play no official government role in the fight against climate change.

But with environmental activists talking about a possible "climate czar" in President-elect Barack Obama's White House, Gore's name inevitably gets mentioned.

IMMEDIATE ENERGY INVESTMENTS

The plan advocates immediate investment in energy efficiency, renewable power generation -- including public investment in wind, solar and geothermal technology -- and the creation of a unified national smart grid.

"Modernize transmission infrastructure so that clean electricity generated anywhere in America can power homes and businesses across the nation," the alliance said in a statement.

The alliance favors "national electricity 'interstates' that move power quickly and cheaply to where it needs to be (and) local smart grids that buy and sell power from households and support clean plug-in cars."

Gore and his group are in line with most U.S. environmental groups, which see the next administration as a chance to act to stem global warming, after what many see as the Bush administration's stalling on this issue.

R.K. Pachauri, head of the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, who shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Gore in 2007, sounded a similar note in a statement issued after the vote.

"The U.S. now has a unique opportunity to assume leadership in meeting the threat of climate change, and it would help greatly if the new president were to announce a coherent and forward looking policy soon after he takes office," Pachauri said on his blog at blog.rkpachauri.org/.
