2 arrested for hanging Obama effigy on Ky. campus By ROGER ALFORD - Associated Press Writer
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- A University of Kentucky student and another man were arrested Thursday, accused of hanging a life-sized likeness of Barack Obama from a tree on the campus.
The incident was one of several in recent weeks involving effigies of the presidential candidates or their running mates. No charges have been filed in four other cases that have made national headlines.
UK Interim Police Chief Joe Monroe said the men "expressed remorse for a stunt that had gotten out of hand."
Arrested were Joe Fischer, 22, a UK student, and Hunter Bush, 21, both of Lexington. Both were being held at Fayette County Detention Center on charges of disorderly conduct related to the hanging of the effigy. They were also charged with burglary and theft at a fraternity house where police said the materials came from.
Lt. Tina Strange, a deputy jailer at the detention center, did not know who the men's attorneys were. She said they were each being held on $7,600 bond.
Monroe said the two men told detectives they decided to hang the effigy after seeing media reports about a Sarah Palin effigy in California.
Witnesses who saw the effigy Wednesday said it was life-sized with an Obama Halloween mask, a suit jacket and sweat pants. It was found hanging from a tree with a noose around its neck.
UK President Lee Todd said the effigy violates the university's code of ethics, and Fischer faces punishment that could include expulsion.
"As outrageous and offensive an act as the effigy was, I truly believe it has mobilized our campus, the community and the state in an effort to battle racism," Todd said Thursday.
It was the second time in about a month such an effigy was found on a college campus. George Fox University, a small Christian college in Oregon, recently punished four students who confessed to hanging a likeness of Obama from a tree.
Meanwhile, a Redondo Beach, Calif., woman removed a Halloween effigy of Barack Obama that was hanging from her balcony with a butcher knife in its neck. She took it down Thursday after neighbors complained.
In West Hollywood, Calif., a man removed an effigy of GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin from his yard Wednesday after several weeks of complaints.
And in Clarksville, Ind., a man had hanged an inflatable doll made to look like Obama from a tree. He took it down Wednesday, and authorities said it didn't appear to violate any state laws.

As the 2008 Presidential campaign progressed, bits and pieces of the information about Barack Obama that were being presented by the media did not fit the actual pattern of life of the potential first family. Thus, our curiosity caused us to do in-depth research and analysis on some of the facets of Obama's life. Our information was gathered from historical books and documents, other later-published sources, and from recent history in daily newspapers, both domestic and international. We feel this information should be known to every voter before the November election.
In 1959/60, the first two airlifts of youth from Kenya were made to the United States. The purpose of the airlifts was to educate African youth so that they could then return to Kenya as leaders. Obama's father was one of the students, and shortly after his arrival in Hawaii he met Obama's mother. Obama was born in 1961. By birth Obama was automatically a member of the African Luo tribe. Shortly after the first airlifts, the African American Student Foundation was formed which has since sponsored educations for Luos including those claiming 'political asylum'.
This was a turbulent period in Kenyan history, with the Luos in open rebellion against European colonial authority, engaging in terrorism and having Communist associations and close ties to Russia and China.
Once in the United States, the Luo youth organized with the intention of affecting Kenyan politics from here. They also involved themselves in United States politics, which began to focus on African-American uprisings. Obama's father left his mother and him after two years to go to Harvard. It went beyond a desire to get an education, the Luos were working towards large political goals on the mainland.
During the absence of Obama's father, Kenya had declared its independence; and a Luo, Jaramongi Oginga Odinga, reportedly Obama's uncle, had been elected Vice President of the new government. Obama's father went to work for the government when he returned to Kenya. However, Oginga Odinga's radical Muslim and communist ideas soon made inevitable a collision with Kenya's President Kenyatta. In 1965, Kenyatta assumed an anticommunist stance; and in 1966, Odinga's left wing was driven out of the party. Obama's father was involved, and Obama has simply said that a conflict with Kenyatta destroyed his father's career, failing to give the reason why.
The Kenyan government then centralized with a single-party system, however the Luos continued to violently agitate. In 1978, Daniel arap Moi became Kenya's second President, and the Luos together with others attempted a coup in 1982. The assassination of a Luo in 1990, pressured Moi into allowing a multi-party election. The pre-election period was characterized by deadly ethnic violence between the Luo Muslims and the Christians. In 1992, the elections were held. Oginga Odinga ran for President, but he was defeated; and his son, Raila Odinga was elected to the Parliament. In the summer of 1992, Barack and his wife-to-be Michelle visited Kenya. Presumably Obama was campaigning for the Odingas, just as he later did in 2006 for Raila's run for the Presidency of Kenya. By the way, this was the same summer that Obama says he worked as a community organizer in Chicago.
The Luos are Middle Eastern Arabs who moved to Sudan in the 1400s, and emigrated from there to many African nations. The Luo's primary economic activity was slave trading African blacks to the Arab lands. Reportedly, the practice still continues. Ironically, early Luo slave trade routes crossed to the Americas.
In Africa, generally the Luo do not inter-marry with African blacks, although it has been reported that Obama has one African black ancestor in his father's side, making him about 6% African black, 44% Arab and 50% white. If not for her, Obama would be half-Arab and half-white. This means that he is not legally African-American. Does this make any difference in how he gets treated??

Three Reporters From McCain-Endorsing Newspapers Removed From Obama's Plane Reporters from three newspapers that endorsed John McCain have been told that they can't travel aboard Barack Obama's plane in the final days leading before Election Day.
Journalists from three major newspapers that endorsed John McCain -- the Washington Times, the New York Post and the Dallas Morning News -- have been booted from Barack Obama's campaign plane for the final leg of the presidential race.
The Washington Times reported Friday that it was notified of the Obama campaign's decision Thursday evening -- even though the paper has covered Obama from the start.
Executive Editor John Solomon told FOXNews.com that the Obama campaign said it didn't have enough seats on the plane, but "I don't think the explanation makes sense to us."
"We've been traveling since 2007 with him. ... We're a relevant newspaper -- every day we break news," Solomon said. "And to suddenly be kicked off the plane for people who haven't covered it as aggressively or thoroughly as we are ... it sort of feels unfair."
He said the newspaper protested but was turned down again by the campaign.
"I can only hope that the candidate who describes himself as wanting to unite the nation doesn't have some sort of litmus test for who he decides gets to cover the campaign," Solomon said, noting that the Obama campaign's decision came just two days after the paper endorsed McCain.
According to the Web site The Drudge Report, the three newspapers' reporters were told to find alternative transportation by Sunday so that the plane could accommodate "network bigwigs" and reporters from two black magazines, Essence and Jet.
Also joining up with the Obama campaign are the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times. According to the campaign, the decision to shuffle around reporters was made because they did not want to add a second plane.
"Unfortunately, demand for seats on the plane during this final weekend has far exceeded supply, and because of logistical issues we made the decision not to add a second plane," Obama senior adviser Anita Dunn said in a written statement. "This means we've had to make hard and unpleasant for all concerned decisions about limiting some news organizations and in some cases not being in a position to offer space to news organizations altogether."
Campaign aides said they are assisting other news outlets with hotel rooms and buses so they can still cover the race.
Dallas Morning News Editor Bob Mong told FOXNews.com that the "indication" from the Obama campaign was that they were kicked off the plane since they don't represent a national outlet and they don't represent a swing state.
"We argued that [considering] the size of the Morning News and stature, we obviously would want to be on board," Mong said. "We're obviously not happy about it, and continue to protest."
He said, in fairness, that the McCain campaign recently pulled Morning News staff off the Republican's plane when space became an issue -- but he said the Morning News would be back on McCain's plane again this weekend.
Obama is not the only candidate to play hardball with the press. McCain's campaign has reportedly barred Time columnist Joe Klein and New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd, who have been critical of the Republican candidate, from the Republican candidate's plane.
