It is unfortunate that our political decisions and opinions are based solely on what the media reports. The media can seek and destroy or seek and promote anyone crazy enough to run for public office at any level of government today. We live in a cultural society today that offers 24/7 news outlets. They differ in their reporting and their ideology. Obviously some are liberal and some are conservative. We listen to them and decide our candidate based on their commentaries and analysis of a candidate's speech, book or their personal life. The media has become and arm of both major parties that now have the ability and power to destroy or promote a candidate.
We have become a society that will, for example, choose FOX News for a conservative view. Or will choose CNN for a more liberal view. Both sides being capable of swaying voters and destroying opposing candidates. In practice, they all share in the same economic gain which is really their first priority.
I asked my mom, who is 83 years old, and others in her age group what determined who they voted for back when there wasn't such a media frenzy presence. They all said that they voted along party lines. If you were a democrat, you voted democrat. If you were a republican you voted republican. But they said that they always respected and supported who ever it was that was elected. Even if it was a candidate you didn't vote for. ("Respect", another lost virtue) I almost think that was a far better and uncomplicated way of voting and choosing your candidate for office. The only thing is that today I can't quite tell the difference between the two parties anymore.
As for me, I think I will be watching less TV and listening less to talk radio. Personally, I need a break from this madness. I already know who I will vote for anyways.
And they wonder why it is becoming more difficult today to find some decent people to run for political office.
Ok, I'll get off my soapbox now! |

I'm glad you got on that soapbox. I learned something new this week, what I learned is that you are correct in that the media endorses and creates a frenzy for who they want in office. I have read many posts by many of you over the last several months that indicates just that and, quite frankly, I thought it was paranoia and conspiracy theory. I listen to the news and expect to get reporting, fair, equal, accurate, and most important, unbiased. Although, even I could not help but notice the lopsided amount of attention paid to Obama compared to McCain on our local news channels over the last few months. Its like the second coming when they report on Obama and an oh yeah by the way McCain is running too. This past week I turned on a talk radio program for the first time ever because I wanted to see what regular people were thinking about Palin. I was astonished when the host spoke of the endorsements of candidates by several of the national news channels and papers across the country. The posts of this forum immediately came to mind. I did not believe the host and spent a fair amount of time checking into this conspiracy theory and found it to be atleast somewhat true. Oh well, disillusioned again. I guess my rose colored glasses aren't helping much Joann. |

Every one of the media outlets are trying to select who they want as President this year and they really don't care what we the people want. |

I rarely rely on "the news" anymore to stay informed - even the weather is a joke. And when it turns nasty, I tune out. |

Not really. I don't know if the word conspiracy is the correct word to use, but there are forces out there, such as the media, that know just how to make people think. Don't get me wrong. Freedom of the press is a constitutional right that I hold with great respect. And it isn't just the media. There are marketing people and companies being paid very well to help bring forth an ideology for "whatever". I respect that also. BUT, we the people need to be able to discern what is right, wrong, believable, unbelievable and what will ultimately better our lives as a people.
And Rene, rose colored glasses aren't so bad. We just need to take them off once in awhile.
