I don't think that 'lacking the will' to fix today's problems is true. What we are experiencing is the result of living in a free society. We are free to walk about this country's land and do pretty much whatever we want. There may be consequences to our choices in behaviors, under the law, but this country has given us the God given right to make choices. And so we do. It boils down to 'personal choice'. Banning guns won't solve the problem. Banning abortion clinics won't solve the problem. Banning illegal drugs 'hasn't' solved the problem. Banning sex offender behavior 'hasn't' solved the problem...and the list goes on.
People inherintly want to make their own choices...and they will. For the good or bad. We gravitate to the part of society that will support and accept our ideology on life. Again, weather it be for the good or bad of society. The government historically, has not and can not change that. The government's role is not to 'make' people good. It is to 'protect' it's people from evil(bad).
So we can create as many government programs or laws our over taxed dollar can produce, but it will not change the inherent fact, that people will make their own choices on how to live or behave in a civilized society.

The column posted by the Admin appears to have been cut off. Thus, we cannot determine the author.
Based on the bulleted points, I believe that the author possesses a liberal ideology that includes eliminating the right to bear arms as guaranteed by the founding documents upon which our nation was born. I believe that the author assigns blame to the National Rifle Association for the violence that occurs in society. I will not present any counter arguments in this thread as they have been made elsewhere. However, this assertion is a testament to the author's naivety or ignorance of the facts re: gun violence.
The second bullet raises some questions. By "working on real causes" does the author mean tougher enforcement of the law and harsher sentences for those who violate our laws? Or, is the author suggesting that more government social programs are needed to fix society's problems? I suspect, based on the first bullet, that it is the former.
Ensuring accountability of peoples' actions is necessary if we are to turn things around. That includes personal actions, corporate behavior, and government accountability.

Excellent responses to this letter. Little Kathina's death may be the catalyst to a change in society so desperately needed. Atleast in Albany. Perhaps the parents of impressionable teenagers will begin doing their jobs and make sure they DO know where their kids are and what they are doing. Maybe when the local drug dealer is selling drugs to the kids on the street corner someone will have the courage to call the police. Hopefully there will be some sort of meaningful and lasting punishment, not a slap on the wrist. These criminals need to know there are consequences to their actions and society itself needs to take action and work with the police instead of against them. OR maybe people will be outraged for 20 minutes then all will be forgotten.....I hope not.
Kathina's death spurred conversation about 'community guns' there is no difference from a gun under a porch or a gun in the neighbors barn......drug dealers on the corners in urbania or drug growers/cookers in suburbia......all the same......
the consequences for the adults should be such that it scares the crap out of those moving up the ladder of age......I dont live in their neighborhood and can only fathom what that would be like.....I work with folks that come from these backgrounds.....it's not nice and cushy but, folks are just as inclined to 'borrow' their neighbors hunting gun for such craziness.......
We know what 'WILL' that we as a society are lacking----we removed it from our schools and it is a 3 letter word--------- >
