School apologizes to Muslim grad

TRENTON, New Jersey — A Muslim student who sued because his public high school graduation ceremony was held in a Baptist church has received an apology from the largest school district in New Jersey.
Bilal Shareef says he had to skip his 2006 graduation from West Side High School because his religious beliefs prohibit him from entering buildings containing icons of God.
The lawsuit was filed on his behalf by the American Civil Liberties Union. Newark public schools apologized to Shareef and his father and agreed to change its policies under terms of the settlement announced Monday.

The school should have seen this coming a mile away. Even if a school has ONE muslim in it, they have to change their entire curriculum just to abide and appease  the muslim religion/culture. I thought this country was call the UNITED states.

Be thankful we haven't gone as far as the Brits have.  They have in essence allowed for paralell judicial/eductaionsl systems in the UK.  Shar'ia Law in the UK can trump the law of the land.

Don't think that can't happen here just as easily. Things appear to be heading in that direction. Our government seems to be bending over backwards for the Muslims, their culture and their religion.

I guess the christians can expect to have holy thurs and good friday off from work every year. And the jehovah witnesses can keep their kids home from school for all holidays/birthdays since they are considered all pagan. And all jews can have all of their religious holidays off from work and school too, huh? And atheists should be able to just stay home from school and work FOREVER.!!

Heck SUNY already gives most of the Jewish holiday's off already.  What's adding a few more at this point?  How many days of classes do they really need anyway?     I actually have no problme with that, but only if the school year gets extended to cover the "lost" days.  It's when we allow for a "separate but equal" code of law that can over ride existing law just to appease a specific sub group.  Justice is supposed to be blind, and not be catering to this group or that group.

I say keep it personal....if you need/want the day off for religious reasons then take it off and make up the work or whatever....religion/God/aliens or whatever really doesn't care where our body is but, how we use it and where our heart/mind is......we dont need 'special' treatment to 'practice' our beliefs, no matter what the venue.....
...if our religion is what is important then walk away from the worldly things----we cannot make the world bend to us.....never have and never will.....the only way to break the world's will is with war, and we are doing pretty good at that, always have and always will, no matter which country we choose to live, we dont need guns or machines to kill or take control, sticks and stones and money and black gold and food work just fine......eventually Rome burns......

...you are a product of your environment, your environment is a product of your priorities, your priorities are a product of you......

The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.

No one bent over backwards for my Italian, immigrant grandparents when they came here.

I remember growing up there were some kids in my neighborhood, who weren't Italian, who were not allowed to play with me because of my nationality. I told my parents, since I was young and was not aware of "difference". I really didn't understand. They just blew it off and made nothing of it and we all survived.
